Preface
Pilar Ortega, MD
Some combination of feedback from my students, readers, and teachers from around the country, and my own added years of doctoring, teaching, and life experience have led to the growth and development of this second edition of Spanish and the Medical Interview.
In adding more grammar tips and practice throughout the text, as well as exercises for self-assessment at the end of each chapter, I hope to make the book more accessible to both self-study students and the classroom setting. Enhanced discussion of the cultural context of health puts the Hispanic patient’s challenges, beliefs, and expressions of illness into perspective. Significantly expanded clinical content guides the learner through an even more thorough history, with new content presented in areas such as procedural consent, pediatrics, geriatrics, and medically relevant travel. In addition, an entire chapter is now dedicated to the discussion of the provider’s impression and plan, to facilitate the most critical part of the medical interview and the reason why the patient went to see you in the first place—the provider’s communication of diagnosis and next steps in management.
I would like to acknowledge the fantastic team at Elsevier for believing in the value of this project and for encouraging the digitalization of the book and its special fe
