INTRODUCTION
I am a scientist, specifically an orthopedic surgeon. My education was in mathematics and medicine. But I am also a religious person, a Christian. Some scientists are atheists, believing nothing they cannot physically prove. Some religious persons completely reject scientific facts; one absurd example is the claim that analysis of religious materials proves that the “Beginning” (known to science as the Big Bang) occurred six thousand years ago. I will not accept the concept that science and religion are separate; I feel that they must be compatible. Therefore, I am putting forth some ideas which could be a rough beginning to understanding this compatibility.
I begin my discussion with a dissection of existence and Genesis to show that creationism and science are not mutually exclusive. I continue, among other things, with “faith” and some troublesome ideas and incompatibilities in the Bible. I then propose my theory relating God to science and touch upon what we should be doing. I don’t claim these as positively the ultimate answers. But I feel they give us some things to think about. As Jack Point points out in Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Yeomen of the Guard”: “Oh, winnow all my folly, folly, folly and you’ll find a grain or two of truth among the chaff.”
