Every day we learn more about the environment and our interaction with it. The science and details are complex and wonderful - but what is clear is that our relationship with the environment is out of balance and that human behaviour must change. We need to learn to live gently and more in harmony with God s creation.
But how do we change? Religious traditions and mystics have used prayer and meditation to bring about change for centuries. Prayer is the powerhouse that inspires us and keeps us from burning out. Prayer helps us to transform our mindsets and to act from a more rooted place.
A Heart for Creation offers prayers, worship resources and reflections to help individuals and groups effect change. From our love for God and love for creation we can grow in our care for the earth as exhorted in the Bible.
Chris Polhill s previous books include Eggs and Ashes: Practical and Liturgical Resources for Lent & Holy Week (with Ruth Burgess), and A Pilgrim s Guide to Iona Abbey (Wild Goose Publications).
Gracious God,
share with us
your heart for creation.
That we may cherish all life,
working together to heal
the damage we have done.
Knowing that in all our struggles
you are beside us,
to inspire, strengthen
and transform us.
Amen

Introduction
This book is offered as a space for reflection on the environmental challenges that face us now and which will confront us in the years to come, and as a resource for preparing worship with an environmental theme. There are five sections to the book, which express aspects of the Christian spiritual journey, each beginning with a theological reflection.
We start by celebrating the amazing wonders of the universe we are part of. This is not just because it is good to praise and be thankful, but also because we will make better decisions from love of the world, rather than from fear of catastrophe. Next comes lamentation for the damage to the planet and the loss of species. This will enable true sorrow before God: this will release us from the paralysis of fear or guilt that prevents action.
The third section, Action for change, includes a six-week challenge of daily facts, actions and reflections, appropriate for Lent, with additional material for Holy Week, but suitable for any six-session programme. Some further liturgical resources complete this section.
The fourth section, Struggle to change, reflects on the difficulties we fa
