TERMS USED IN THIS BOOK
I t is helpful to have a list of terms I use frequently throughout the book. They are spelled several ways by different people. Since the Lakota language was oral, many interpretations may be found in books. I have done my best in the way I was taught. I have given a brief description for the reader, but its meaning is more than I can describe in a few words. Each Lakota elder explained it a little different. I have also written an English pronunciation as best as I can to make it easier for the reader. It is not my language; therefore it may be flawed and I do not have any entitlement to it. I am using the terms as I was taught and therefore humbly use them in respect to the elders, to honor them and their sacrifices to keep these ceremonies alive.
For easier reading, I will use shorter versions or English words when I refer to them. The chanunpa refers to the Chanunpa Wakan . The sun dance refers to the Wiwanyag Wacipi . The vision quest refers to the Hanbleceya . The purification lodge or lodge refers to the Inipi . English words do not fully encompass the exact meaning of the ceremonies, but may give enough of a visual for the reader to understand.
Chanunpa Wakan - Chun noon pa Wah kun - A ceremony of smoking and praying. Sacred instrument used to smoke and pray, made of two pieces with one being of wood. A sacred moving energy.
Cante Juha - Chun tay Yuh hah - The container of the heart. A leather or animal fur pelt bag to hold the Chanunpa Wakan.
Inipi - Ee nee pee - A ceremony to pray, purify, cleanse and sweat in a lodge built with saplings. Brings back the sacred breath of life to live again.
Inyan - Een yahn - The sacred stones used in Inipi ceremony.
Ishna Ta Awi Ca Lowan - Ish na Tah Ah wee Cha Lo wan - A girl’s coming of age ceremony which is done after her first menses.
Hanbleceya - Hahn blay chay yah - To cry and pray for a vision, a vision quest ceremony, a sacred rite of passage.
Mni - Mi nee - The sacred water used in ceremonies.
Mitakuye Oyasin - Mee talk oo yay Oy yaw sin - All my relations are interconnected.
Pilamayelo - Pee la ma yay low - Thank you and gratitude.
Wakinyan - Wa kin yahn - The mysterious bird of power that creates thunder and lightning - thunder beings.
Wiwanyag Wacipi - Wee wahn yahg Wah chee pee - A ceremony to pray, dance, fast from food and water, while staring at the sun, known as the sun dance.
PREFACE
I published my second book, The Honey Pit: Finding the Grandmother’s Way in 2015. A month before it went to press, I was exhausted from writing and editing. I was ready to promote the book, and get back to lecturing, teaching classes, spiritual consulting, and my ongoing ceremonial life. While praying with the chanunpa, the words, “Language of the Sacred” revealed itself to me, and I knew it was going to be the title of my next book.
The Chanunpa Wakan or chanunpa, is an instrument with which one centers themselves, prays and then lights and smokes it. A special mix of tobacco and herbs is made especially for this purpose, however, none of the ingredients are hallucinogenic. The ceremony may be done alone or in a group setting.
A week after the book’s release, my beloved cat companion of nineteen years passed. He was my baby boy and a source of unconditional love. As I held him for the last time, I sang a sacred song given to me on one of my several Hanbleceyas to help with crossing into the spirit world. A Hanbleceya is a ceremony in which one fasts from food and water for up to four days and cries for a vision. For this particular vision, I was sequestered all alone outside in nature on a high hill. This song speaks of rest and going to sleep. I sang songs to him every day of his life as I rocked him on my lap.
I believe the crossing song gave him comfort. Upon taking his last breath I promised I would find him when I crossed and I was grateful for his companionship. His passing allowed me to review my life and grieve, not only for him but for parts of my life I had thought I had resolved. Every layer of healing goes deeper as wounds are identified. All my life I have been aware of a calling. I have worked hard to learn who I am and, many times, who I am not. Doing so has given me many healings, experiences, and knowledge for helping others, especially through the ceremonies I have been trained in and given permission to conduct. But more importantly, the Great Spirit, or Spirit as I refer to it as, has guided me.
I began the second writing of this book my third, in 2017 after the Wiwanyag Wacipi (sun dance) ceremony I was called in vision to attend.
I started this book and stopped three times over the years, thinking I understood the title and what Spirit wanted from me. Each time I wrote for a couple of months and then stopped. Each time I knew it was not right. I did not know I had more experiences to go through before I would understand what was being asked of me.
Before my vision from Spirit, I had no intention of writing another book. I could never have realized what this book would entail. I wrote now knowing it would be a memoire, non-fiction, instead of hiding my experiences in a lead fictional character. It is my personal story seen through my eyes and understandings.
Although the other two books I have written, There’s a Whole in the Sky and The Honey Pit: Finding the Grandmother’s Way, had many of my personal experiences, I was allowed to play with timelines and add creativity to the story for better flow, int
