N OTE ON THE S ECOND E DITION
When we began working on LifeKeys more than a decade ago, we thought we were designing a class to help people understand who they were and what they might do for God. Since then we ve had a lot of surprises, both in how people use the materials and in the ways the materials address issues we had not consciously surfaced. In this second edition, we ve had a chance to address some specific needs as well as marvel at God s hand on our efforts. Here are a few of the surprises.
The depth of discovery . In our very first class, Sandra, who had led business-based career development workshops for years, was struck by the deep level at which people were tackling the materials. With the added faith perspective, people were more honest about their struggles to match who they were and what they might do.
Since then we ve had people use LifeKeys in many ways. In this edition, we ve developed separate exercises and reflection questions for the most common purposes. These LifeKeys applications are
Volunteer and Service Opportunities
First Career Direction
Midlife Transitions
Retirement Planning
In addition, the LifeKeys Leadership Resource contains ideas for team building, setting organizational direction, and other areas.
Affirmation of many ways to serve God . We could tell story after story of people who didn t think their interests could in any way be used by God. Or who felt that their career paths were separate from what God wanted them to do.
One woman who assumed her lack of college degree disqualified her from the kind of church work she hoped to pursue, decided to apply for a staff position after identifying her passion for children s ministry. She excelled in the position and soon was given even larger responsibilities.
Another LifeKeys attendee, a computer programmer, thought her job was totally disconnected from service to God. The class helped her dream about new ways to put her gifts to use. She soon took a new job at a hospital. That led to discovering a new passion- helping a children s hospital in Haiti. Soon she was fundraising and putting together teams and resources, effectively acting on what God had placed in her heart.
Still other attendees found affirmation of what they were already doing or found new ways to serve right where they were- at work, at home, at church, or in the community.
The inclusivity of our message . While we wrote LifeKeys from our own Christian perspective, presenting a biblical view of giftedness, mission, and true servanthood, we worked hard to honor the beliefs and needs of people with religious convictions different from our own. We are thankful that the first edition of LifeKeys has helped people of varying faiths. We have taught seminars with people present fr
