The earth is the Lord’s,

PSALM 24:1
Old Testament
10
At the Beginning
In the very beginning, God made heaven and earth.
There was no light. It was completely dark.
So God said, “Let there be light!”
And there was light.
On day two God put water into the sea
and clouds into the sky.
On day three God was very busy. He made
mountains, hills, and valleys. He created oceans,
lakes, rivers, and streams. After this, God made
the earth green: grasses, trees, and flowers sprang
up. And God saw it was all good.
On day four God said, “There should be lights
in the sky!” So he made the sun, moon, and stars.
He divided the year into seasons: spring, summer,
autumn, and winter.
11
12
Day five came.
God said, “Let there be living creatures!”
So he made sea creatures: jellyfish, shellfish,
flatfish, and crabs. He made birds and insects:
eagles, sparrows, and hummingbirds wasps, flies,
and bees. And God saw that they were all good.
On day six God made creatures that live on land:
dogs, horses, and camels; lions, lizards, and snails.
And God saw it was all good.
13
But something was missing: there were no
people! So God created the first man, Adam –
and the first woman, Eve. He made them like
himself, so that they could be his friends.
God looked at everything that he had made.
It was all very good. So on day seven God rested!
That’s how God created the heavens
and the earth.
Genesis 1–2
14
In the Garden
God gave Adam and Eve a beautiful garden to live
in. It was called the Garden of Eden.
“Give names to all the animals,” said God.
So Adam made up names for the creatures!
“Enjoy the garden,” God told Adam. “You can
eat anything you like – except the fruit from that
tree in the middle of the garden.”
So Adam and Eve looked after the creatures in
the Garden of Eden. They enjoyed the flowers and
fruit. Until one day a snake slithered up to Eve.
“Take a bite of the fruit on that tree,” he hissed.
“But God told us not to eat that fruit,” said Eve.
“Just one tiny little bite,” sneered the snake.
“Surely that can’t matter!”
So Eve took a bite of the fruit.
Before long Adam came to find her.
15
16
“Taste this delicious fruit,” said Eve. “I have
– and it hasn’t harmed me.”
So Adam took a bite of this forbidden fruit too.
Late in the afternoon, God came to visit them
in the garden.
“Adam! Where are you?” he called. “Why are
you hiding from me?”
“Eve gave me the fruit – so I ate it,” said Adam.
17
“The snake tricked me,” explained Eve.
Adam and Eve had disobeyed God. So he sent
them out of the Garden of Eden – forever.
He put angels and a flaming, flashing sword to
stop Adam and Eve returning to the garden.
Adam and Eve felt sorry and very sad. Now
they had to work on the land every day, digging
and sowing, hoeing and raking.
Sometimes they thought back to the happy
times they had enjoyed in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 3

Noah’s Great Ark
Years later, many people were living on the earth.
But they were arguing and cheating and fighting.
One good man remained. His name was Noah.
“A great flood is coming,” God warned Noah.
“You must build a huge boat. When it’s finished,
fill it with your family, and with two of every sort
of animal.”
Noah did as God told him.
He built a huge boat
– an ark. Then he filled it
with his family and two
of every sort of animal.
When the last
creature had climbed
on board, God
shut the door.
19
20
Then it started to rain. It wasn’t long before the
ark was floating on the water. Noah, his family, and
the animals were all safe and warm inside.
After forty days and nights, the rain stopped.
The ark landed on a mountainside. Crasshh! But
Noah could still see water everywhere.
He let a raven fly out to try to find out what
was happening. It never came back.
A few days later,
Noah let a dove fly
out from the ark.
She soon came back,
carrying a green olive
leaf in her beak.
Plants must be
growing again! It was
now time to come out
of the ark.
21
Noah, his family, and all the animals climbed out
of the ark. It was good to be on dry land again!
God put a wonderful rainbow in the sky.
“I will never flood the whole earth again,”
he promised.
Genesis 6–9

The Unfinished
Tower
One day, some people decided to build a very,
very tall tower, reaching high into the air.
“This sky-scraping tower will show just how
clever we are!” they boasted.
When he saw the tower, God was angry. These
people were much too pleased with themselves!
So God decided to stop them
At this time, everyone spoke the same language.
But when the builders woke up the next morning,
they were all speaking different languages. Nobody
could understand what anyone else was saying!
So they had to leave their tower unfinished.
This tower was called “Babel” – which means
“all mixed-up”!

A New Start
Long ago, in a far-off land called Ur, lived
a man named Abraham.
Abraham was married to Sarah.
They were both very old
– but they had no children.
“Leave your home and your
friends,” God said to Abraham one
day. “Take a long journey with Sarah.
I’m going to give you a special new land.”
This country was called Canaan. Because
God promised it to Abraham, we also call it the
“Promised Land”.
Abraham and Sarah were bold. They believed
God’s promise, and were ready to leave home.
They soon started out for Canaan, taking their
servants, their camels, their cattle, and their sheep.
25
26
Abraham had no map for their journey. But
God said, “I’ll show you the route to the Promised
Land.”
After journeying for many months, Abraham
and Sarah came at last to the land God had told
them about. They saw lush, green valleys
and fast-flowing rivers.
“ This is the country I promised you!” God told
Abraham. “I’m giving this land to you, to your
children, and to your grandchildren.”
Abraham thanked God for bringing him and his
family to such a wonderful land.
Although they were both now very old,
Abraham and Sarah really wanted to have a baby.
One day God sent three visitors to Abraham.
“Sarah is going to have a baby boy,” they told him.
Sarah just laughed! She couldn’t believe it.
27
But about a year later, Sarah had a baby boy,
just as God had promised.
