The Journey Begins
"ALL TO JESUS I surrender, all to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live." In the first stanza of the famous hymn, "I Surrender All," the songwriter, Judson W. Van De Venter, captures a profound truth. As we surrender all to Jesus, we have the immense benefit of living in His presence daily, going through life with Him. Surrender is not a destination but a journey with many winding turns over rough terrain with impediments that sometimes block our path. While this journey may have its challenges, it is a worthy pursuit that you will undertake with God as you live daily in His presence. Abiding with Him on this journey aligns you with His plan for your life, opening you to His peace and joy in ways you have never experienced.
By beginning this study, you have accepted the invitation to start the journey to a lifestyle of surrender. This decision will call for you to evaluate who you are and how you see God in ways that may be new and confusing. You will discover hidden truths, not hidden from you but hidden in you. While the journey may seem daunting, it will not be completed in isolation. The Holy Spirit is your Helper, Guide, and Teacher Who accompanies you every step of the way (John 14:26 NASB). You will never be alone for one second on this path. As you look to Him, you will be able to access all that He provides you and begin this adventure knowing you will start this journey in partnership with God.
Getting Started
This workbook is designed to serve as an excavation tool to help you unearth thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and concealed agendas, which impede your path to surrender. You can easily recognize some of these impediments because of the challenges they have created in your past. Others may have been concealed, hiding in plain sight while you were oblivious to their damage. Whatever your level of awareness, these impediments will hinder your intent of being transformed into the image of Christ on Earth. Identification of them allows us to see clearly what has attempted stop or slow our progress. This clarity provides exposure to our internal thoughts and attitudes, creating openness which can lead to profound understanding and healing if pursued with a willing heart that is honest before God.
As you candidly answer the questions provided throughout this workbook, empowered by Holy Spirit, you will mine the deep places of your thoughts and feelings, revealing areas of your life that have stopped you from moving closer to God. This process of self-discovery may be painful as you expose these toxic beliefs and attitudes about yourself and your Creator. Do not allow the emotions you feel to cause you to abandon the quest to uncover the truth hidden within. As these harmful beliefs are brought to light, you are now able, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to "refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God" (2 Corinthians 10:5 AMP Classic Edition).
How to Use This Workbook
This workbook is divided into individual chapter studies of the book Surrender: The Forgotten Spiritual Discipline , with each chapter study including: Scripture study Excerpts from Surrender: The Forgotten Spiritual Discipline with page numbers for reference (hardback page numbers preceded by HB and paperback page numbers Questions with space provided for answers Concepts to consider Free-flow journaling exercises
To complete this study, you will need the following: Copy of the Surrender: The Forgotten Spiritual Discipline book Table of "Feeling Words" (provided below) Journaling pages at the end of each section and at the back of the workbook to capture your thoughts
You can read Surrender: The Forgotten Spiritual Discipline first and then complete the workbook, or you can read the book and complete the workbook simultaneously. You will, however, need to refer to the book often as you work through the questions. The following sections detail several ways to ensure you receive the most out of this study.
Individual or Group Study
This study may be done alone or as part of a group but is most effective when questions are answered thoroughly and honestly. If you choose to complete this workbook by individual study, set aside time daily to work through the sections. Pray before you begin, and invite the Holy Spirit to help you work through each question. Take your time and resist the urge to rush. Sit with your thoughts and emotions, capturing them in the space provided, the journal pages at the end of each chapter, a personal journal, or a notebook.
If you choose to complete this study as a group, you can create an atmosphere where each individual not only grows from their personal revelations and findings but is also able glean from other participants’ discoveries and insights. A group leader will be needed to guide the discussion. The final section of this workbook titled "Leader Guide" contains information to assist group leaders in successfully facilitating the study. It would also benefit each group participant to complete the session questions prior to the group meeting. Some questions will require time, thought, and prayer to answer. Giving each question the attention and focus necessary in a group setting will be challenging. In addition, having the questions completed before the group meeting will help generate more dialogue, allowing each person to share their discoveries which will benefit the entire group.
Take Your Time
In today’s culture, there is often a penchant for rushing to complete any task. As we undertake this excavation of our inner workings, resist the urge to race through the workbook seeking the imaginary blue ribbon for a fast finish. Instead, ponder the question, pray for the Holy Spirit’s insight, and wait a moment until you gain clarity around your response. Then begin to answer the question. This approach will help you receive the maximum benefit from this study.
Don’t Skip the Journaling Exercises!
The free-flow journaling exercises are essential to this study and should be given attention and focus. Most of the processing we do is on the go, making split-second decisions as we quickly assess the information being received at lightning speed, while we move throughout our days. Journaling provides a safe place to stop, capture, and process our thoughts an
