Sherlock Holmes
A Case of Identity
The famous story by Arthur Conan Doyle, retold by Stewart Ross
Sherlock Holmes was a famous English private detective. He didn’t really exist, but the writer Arthur Conan Doyle wrote so well that many people think he did.

Sherlock Holmes started work as a detective about 150 years ago in the city of London, along with his friend Dr. Watson. The way Holmes solved attacks and murders has made him famous all over the world. Even today, films are still made about his detective work.
chapter 1
Life is so strange

It is a cold day. Sherlock Holmes is sitting beside the fire with his friend Dr. Watson.
They are in Holmes’ rooms at 221B Baker Street, London.
‘My dear fellow, life is so strange,’ says Holmes.
‘We could not invent a world like ours.
‘Imagine flying over London. Look down through all the windows. You will see amazing things! Incredible!’
Watson does not agree. ‘I am not so sure,’ he replies. ‘The stories in the newspapers are boring. They are all the same.’
The detective shakes his head. ‘You do not look carefully, Watson. Go under the surface. Study the detail – it will surprise you.’
Watson still does not agree. ‘I know why you say that, Holmes. You look only at important cases.
‘Let’s test my idea,’ Watson goes on. He picks up a newspaper.
‘Here you are, Holmes. The headline says,
Husband cruel to his wife .
‘It is a very ordinary story. I know what it is about before I read it. It goes like this:
‘The husband has another woman. He drinks too much. He gets angry, and he hits his wife.
‘She has bruises. Now she wants a divorce.
‘History is full of stories like this.’
‘Ah-ha!’ laughs Holmes. ‘You have chosen the wrong story! I know this one.
‘It is about Mr. and Mrs. Dundas. He does not drink alcohol. There is no other woman. And Mr. Dundas does not hit his wife.
‘So why does she want to leave him? I will tell you.
‘At the end of every meal, he takes out his false teeth. He then throws them at his wife!
‘That is why she wants a divorce.’
Holmes hands his snuff box to Watson. ‘Take a pinch of snuff, my friend,’ he says. ‘I was right, wasn’t I?
‘Your newspaper story looked normal, but it isn’t. As I said, life is full of surprises.’
Watson looks at the gold snuff box.
