Cooper Virginia State Refugee Coordinator Virginia Office of Newcomer Services Contact: Penny Boyd, penny.boyd@dss.virginia.gov or 804-726-7933 This Transmittal is to ask your assistance in reviewing proposed state legislation that may affect refugees. The Virginia General Assembly (GA) convenes at noon on Thursday, January 12 and adjourns on Saturday, March 11. The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) monitors proposed legislation that may affect the clients it serves and the programs it administers. If proposed social services legislation affects the refugee population, the Office of Newcomer Services (ONS) is directed to review it. ONS’ review is to include both (i) a list known affected constituents and constituent organizations and (ii) constituent positions on the legislation, if known. If VDSS asks ONS to review proposed legislation, Penny Boyd will fax and e-mail a copy to you. She will ask for your reply within four hours of receipt of her request.
