PR Newswire ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 15, 2012
-Exhibits Patient Safety Products at Medication Safety Conference 2012
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates,Nov. 15, 2012/PRNewswire/ -- CareFusion Corp. (NYSE: CFN), a leading, global medical technology company, today announced plans to present the results of a closed-loop medication safety initiative completed with UAE-based Corniche Hospital, in collaboration with Cerner, during the Medication Safety Conference,Nov. 15-17in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The program enables data sharing and centralizes clinical information between the Pyxis MedStation® system and the Pyxis® Anesthesia system from CareFusion, and the Cerner electronic health record (EHR). In addition, Corniche Hospital uses Pyxis CIISafe™ system for management of controlled substances and the Pyxis PAR system for a closed-loop medication replenishment process.
Dr. Adeline Saliba, acting pharmacy manager and medication safety manager for Corniche Hospital, will be presenting on the hospital's use of these industry-leading technologies to support an integrated positive patient identification (PPID) system designed to improve patient health outcomes and safety (Day One, Session Three: Automation and Informatics).
"Our automation journey has allowed us to streamline our processes and integrate our automated solutions, supported by clinical decision support, to close the loop on medication administration," said Saliba. "For bar-coded medication administration (BCMA), our compliance rate has steadily increased from 91.25 percent when the project was initiated inMay 2012, up to 95.7 percent inSeptember 2012— exceeding our 95 percent target — hence further reinforcing the five rights of medication administration."
The closed-loop approach from Corniche Hospital supported by CareFusion technologies has eliminated unnecessary processes and streamlined workflow efficiencies to ensure checks and balances are in place for diverse steps in medication management. This allows nurses to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time on direct patient care. Corniche Hospital plans to begin deploying the system to all clinical areas throughout the organization by mid-2013.
In addition to highlighting the success of this initiative, CareFusion will be demonstrating its breadth of medication safety and automation expertise. Gail Berglund, executive director of Clinical Practice for CareFusion, will be presenting on the role of "smart pumps" in transforming the safety of medication administration (Day O ne, Session Three: Automation and Informatics). Berglund will offer insight into how infusion pumps, like theAlaris® systemfrom CareFusion, integrate a suite of specialized hardware and software to offer advanced features and functionality to help ensure the highest levels of safety when administering intravenous medications. At its exhibition area, CareFusion will also be offering demonstrations of bi-directional interoperability capabilities of the Alaris System with the Cerner EHR.
CareFusion also will be exhibiting a variety of solutions designed to maximize patient safety and enhance medication management. Products on-display at the C areFusion booth include:
