Doctor Jobs - Medicspro - The UK's Leading Recruitment Agency for Doctors Jobs and Nursing Jobs, is Seeing the 'Brain Drain' Trend of Doctors Seeking Jobs Overseas
PR Newswire LONDON, October 8, 2012
LONDON,October 8, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
Following a recent research piece issued by the Financial Times, Medicspro - the UK's leading recruitm ent agency for Doctors Jobs, is seeing a growing trend for Doctors now seeking employment overseas.
According to research, the top destinations are nowAustralia and New Zealand, with more than 8,000 people from the UK requesting certification to practice in Australia and New Zealand. Whilst the lure of better weather and lifestyle may be an obvious factor, it would also seem that a shortage ofDoctor Jobsin the UK, particularly for younger medics is a key factor.
Alan Bell, of the Association of Medical Recruiters ofAustralia and New Zealand stated "In the last few years we've seen a general increase in the number of doctors and health professionals from the UK, particularly from Ireland for nursing, particularly from England for doctors,"
Between 2008-11, almost 17,000 GMC certificates have been issued to UK doctors applying for jobs worldwide, though not all would have succeeded in winning an overseas role, and individuals may have also requested more than one certificate.
The flow of UK Doctors has started debate over global health equity. The UK is a net exporter of doctors to developing countries, yet also hires from developing countries.
Bill McMillan, head of medical pay and workforce at the NHS Employers organisation denied that there w as a sharp increase, saying, "There are twice as many NHS doctors as there were in the 1990s, which may result in a small increase in the number moving overseas, but the proportions have been remarkably consistent over recent decades.
"NHS doctors who move abroad are broadly balanced by excellent doctors trained overseas who have moved here and deliver quality care to patients."
"We are experienced an increased demand for UK trained locum doctors from hospitals throughout the country." Sid Selner, Doctors Divisional Manager
