Ekso Bionics Opens Ekso Store PR Newswire LONDON, June 11, 2012
LONDON,June 11, 2012/PRNewswire/ --A new facility thatoffers people the opportunity to walk in bionic suits Ekso Bionics, designer and creator of exoskeletons - bionic suits - that physically augment humans, is opening its first Ekso Store™ in Cambridge, in collaboration with Prime Physio, a physiotherapy centre specialising in sports injury and rehabilitation of those who have suffered a spinal cord injury or other neurological conditions. The Ekso Store™ will give people the opportunity to better understand the technology, its potential and clinical benefits that cutting edge bionic exoskeleton technology can provide. Ekso™ will be available to purchase for home use under clinical supervision with delivery in September of this year. Ekso™ is a wearable robot that powers wheelchair users up, enabling them to stand and walk. The suit fulfilled the FDA requirements earlier this year and recently received CE Marking Certification qualifying as a medical device to be incorporated into rehabilitation programs. In the past four months, Ekso Bionics has delivered the Ekso™ suit to top ten rehabilitation clinics in theUSAand recently started deliveries inEurope, where the device has been fully integrated in the rehabilitation program. A pan European study has been initiated to quantify the benefits of being upright and walking. Ekso™ is a ready-to-wear, battery-powered bionic suit designed for users with spinal cord injuries, lower-limb weakness/paralysis and pathologies that inhibit their ability to walk. It is strapped over the user's clothing. The user doesn't bear the weight however, as the suit transfers its 20 kg load directly to the ground. Each Ekso™ can be adjusted in a few minutes to fit most people weighing 100 kg or less, and standing between 157cm to 188cm, with at least partial upper body strength. The suit provides unprecedented knee flexion, which translates into a natural gait. "Today, with the opening of our first Ekso Store™, we have taken an important step on our journey to revolutionise mobility options for those who want to walk again" stated Eythor Bender, CEO of Ekso Bionics. "Nearly 300 people have walked in Ekso™ and the Ekso Store™ is an exciting new concept which challenges people to come and try this technology for themselves to see what it can offer them, it is much more than a mobility option" said Andy Hayes, MD of Ekso Bionics EMEA .
