Support Pledge for 'Underfunded' Care Sector

Care services have come under the spotlight this week as the Care Minister admitted that the sector is currently experiencing a great deal of strain and needs greater support from the government.

Norma Lamb suggested that the care system 'has remained underfunded for decades' and he also stated that it is now under 'enormous strain.' The statement follows news published indicating that the social care crisis actually adds up to a huge bill for the economy in the United Kingdom - perhaps reaching as high as £5bn a year.

The bill accounts for benefit payments and the lost wages and tax contributions of carers. The Care Minister did offer some 'hope for the future' by suggesting that in the coming months new plans would be made to make support available for care providers in the form of a new C are and Support Bill which is currently being drafted.

The underfunding has been blamed chiefly on the austerity measures that the government has put in place in order to deal with the economic difficulties experienced all over Europe and beyond. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the care sector can be looked at in terms of the support and funding it receives as a priority, in order to improve the efficiency of the system.

In order to maintain standards approved by theCQCand encourage growth in the care industry, sufficient funding and proper management of that funding is seen as a fundamental factor. It remains to be seen what impact the Care and Support Bill will have, but industry experts are enthused by the attention being paid to a key area in society.
