The end of Antibiotics and the Ensuing Apocalypse

PR Newswire

We are heading towards a world without antibiotics, writes Rita Lobo of The New Economy. We are heading for a world where cures for common infections fall out of existence and routine procedures carry with them life-threatening risks. In short, we are heading for the apocalypse of man.

"Antibiotics are the vital difference between modern medicine and the carnage that occurred before," says the Director General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan. "Things as common as strep throat or a child's scratched knee could once again kill."

A special report in the new Winter 2014 issue of The New Economy looks at how antibiotics may well cease to take effect in the near future, giving rise to an era in which bacteria are utterly immune to modern medicine and an era in which we are utterly helpless to resist infection.

"Infections were a major cause of death before the advent of antibiotics," says Dr Arjun Srinivasan, Associate Director at the US Centres for Disease Control Prevention, who believes a world without antibiotics to be unthinkable.

Reporting on the ways in which bacteria are rapidly evolving to combat our current classes of antibiotics and the irresponsible ways in which these medications are used worldwide, The New Economy report ponders the grim reality that awaits us all if we allow this to continue unchecked.

To read the article in full, along with a range of others on matters of technology, energy, business and strategy, read the new Winter 2014 issue of The New Economy online and in print now.
