The following papers represent the proceedings of a bilateral Colloquium
on Advanced Materials, held in Sarajevo in September 1988 between the
European Community and the SFR of Yugoslavia.
The organisers are pleased to acknowledge the willing and enthusiastic
response of all contributors to the meeting as well as the participants
who helped to make this a lively and very interesting event.

This Colloquium on Advanced Materials arose out of an idea of
Dr. Jovicevic of ENERGOINVEST to hold an EC/Yugoslavia meeting devoted
to all aspects of powder metallurgy. Such a meeting would identify areas
of mutual interest and help to "thicken-up" the developing cooperation
in Science and Technology between the Commission of the European
Communities and the SFR of Yugoslavia. The proposal was accepted in
principle by the Commission for support under the Communities'
International Cooperation in Science & Technology Programme and the
Commission's Joint Research Centre was asked to act as co-organiser on
the EC side.
A careful analysis of the two sides' interests in the fields of advanced
materials research and development indicated the need to broaden the
theme of the proposed Joint Colloquium to cover a range of aspects of
advanced metallic and ceramic materials R&D, in order to ensure that
the resulting programme would be of mutual interest and benefit. A three
day programme was devised with a series of "horizontal" themes
(preparation, synthesis, characterisation, etc) culminating with a
half-day devoted to a sectoral approach to advanced materials
requirements.
The Colloquium was held in a beautiful villa just outside Sarajevo and
all the participants were most impressed by the excellent local
arrangements which had been organised by Dr. Jovicevic and members of
his research group.
The following collected papers from the Colloquium indicate the breadth,
depth and above all the quality of the presentations. The post -
colloquium results are also impressive. Around forty proposals for more
- V concrete cooperative R&D actions have been submitted to the Yugoslavia
Authorities for consideration under the EC/Yugoslavia cooperation
agreement. At the same time a number of visits to laboratories have
taken place as a result of the personal contacts made during the
Colloquium. This process of increasing cooperation in this important
field is expected to continue for some time to come.
