Fête de la Vénerie

à Flaran

C

omme chaque année, Les Amis de Flaran marquent l’ouverture de

la saison de la chasse par une grande manifestation le troisième di-

manche de septembre. Cette année, ce sera donc le 17 septembre qu’ils

célèbreront la traditionnelle messe son-

née de Saint-Hubert présidée cette fois

par l’Archevêque d’Auch. Comme d’ha-

bitude, cette grande messe sera suivie

de présentations de meutes de “petite”

vénerie (pour la chasse à courre à pied),

d’un apéritif offert par l’Association, et

l’après-midi à l’Hippodrome de Flaran,

d’une présentation de “grande” vénerie

(pour la chasse à courre à cheval), de

concerts de trompes de chasse et d’un

carrousel par les Cavaliers d’Armagnac.

Manifestation ouverte au grand public,

elle laisse le choix à ses participants soit

d’apporter leur pique-nique à consommer sous les tilleuls de Flaran,

soit de retenir un repas servi par un traiteur. La fête se terminera par des

Vêpres chantées dans l’église de l’abbaye à 17 heures.

Fête rappelant une société largement révolue s’il en fut, elle illustre en

même temps le regain d’intérêt pour la chasse à courre sous toutes ses

formes que connaît ce début du XXI

e

siècle. Il faut noter que la vénerie

française dispose d’une surface boisée sans équivalent en Europe, et

qu’il n’y a jamais eu autant d’équipa-

ges qu’à l’heure actuelle. La grande

majorité d’entre eux est postérieure

à 1980. Tous sont obligatoirement

dotés d’une autorisation de meute

pour chasser un animal déterminé

(lièvre, renard, chevreuil, lapin, cerf,

sanglier).

Fondée en 1907, la Société de Vé-

nerie rassemble les pratiquants de la

chasse à courre, ainsi que ses sym-

pathisants. Depuis quarante-cinq ans

elle édite une revue trimestrielle dif-

fusée sur abonnement uniquement,

qui traite de tous les aspects de ce sport avec à l’appui de très belles

photos. Depuis peu, elle publie également de petits fascicules sur la vie

quotidienne des veneurs, les chiens, les chevaux, les animaux chassés,

etc. En janvier 2000, elle a ouvert un site internet, qui a pour but d’ex-

pliquer la vénerie aux profanes et de fournir toutes les informations

nécessaires.

s always, the Friends of Flaran will celebrate the start of the hunting

season with a major event on the third Sunday of September. This

year these festivities will take place on September 17, and will open

with the traditional mass dedicated to

Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hun-

ters, under the auspices of the Archbis-

hop of Auch. As usual, this high mass

will be followed by a presentation of

packs of hounds trained to hunt small

game (“petite vènerie”), a pre-lunch

drink served by the Friends of Flaran,

and at the Flaran Hippodrome in the

afternoon by a presentation of hounds

trained to hunt big game (“grande vè-

nerie”), as well as trumpet concerts and

a carousel of Cavaliers d’Armagnac.

Open to the public, this event leaves

people free to bring their own picnic to be enjoyed under the Flaran

linden trees, or to reserve a meal served by a caterer.The day will come

to a close with Vespers sung by a choir at the abbey church at 5 pm.

Nothing could be more reminiscent of a world gone by. Yet at the same

time, this event is an eloquent illustration of the fact that, in these days

at the 21st century’s outset, ever more people are attracted to the sport

of hunting. France does of course boast far more wooded areas than

the rest of Europe, and has never had

more packs of hounds than it does to-

day. Most of these came into existence

after 1980, and all have the obligatory

permit for hunting a particular animal

species (hares, foxes, deer, stags, rabbit,

boar).

Created in 1907, the Société de Vène-

rie has hunters as well as mere devotees

among its members. For forty-five years

now it has been publishing a quarterly

magazine devoted to every aspect of the

sport, complete with excellent photo-

graphs. It has recently launched a series

of booklets dealing with a hunter’s everyday experiences, his dogs, his

horses, the species he hunts, and so forth. In January 2000 the society

set up a website designed to explain hunting to the layman and to pro-

vide him with everything there is to know about it.
