Stage 1: Setting Up

Thank you for choosing FastMac. Please feel free to contact us at any time with any questions or comments you may have while installing your LCD Screen. Let’s begin.

1. PREPARING FOR DISASSEMBLY: You will need the following: 1) an old credit card along with some sandpaper 2) a small Philips screwdriver 3) a soft cloth or towel (to protect the finish and the display.

3. Shut down the MacBook, unplug the AC Adapter close the display and allow components to cool for 10 minutes before beginning this procedure.

2. First, you will need to modify the credit card by sanding the short side into a bev - eled edge. Set the item aside.

4. Lay down a soft cloth and flip the MacBook over exposing the battery.

5. Using a small coin, turn the battery release latch to unlock the battery from its bay. It should pop up slightly. Lift the battery out of the bay.

7. Locate and loosen the three screws show in the picture. These are captive screws so they will not come out of the L-bracket.

Stage 2: Removing Battery

6.    With the battery bay exposed, touch the area shown in the picture to discharge any static electricity.

8. Holding the long end of the L-bracket, lift it out in the direction shown in the picture.

9. Remove the two 5.5mm screws on the optical drive slot side.

11. Remove the 4 screws on the rear of the computer. Take note that the ones closest to the center are 12mm and the ones on the outside are 8mm.

Stage 3 Unscrewing Parts

10. The screws on the opposite side need not be removed. But if you do, make sure you replace them correctly (they are 3mm). Do not use longer screws, as this may damage the computer.

12. Carefully turn the MacBook over and remove the three screws.

13. Please notice that there are a number of screws shown. You must begin by removing the second screw. Remove each 3mm screw shown. There are a total of four screws to remove. Do not remove any other scews.

15. (TOP CASE) Remove the 3 screws as shown in the picture.

Stage 4: Unscrewing Parts

14. Remove each 6mm screw, one on either side of the battery connector.

16. Remove the screws shown in the picture. The two on the left are 3mm and the one on the right is 4.5mm.

17. Carefully turn the computer back over and open the display. Using the edge of the modified old plastic credit card, gently insert the sanded edge in between the top case and the left side of the computer.

19. The top case will begin to work free. Carefully lift it slightly.

Stage 5: Removing Keyboard

18. Slowly move your way around the edge of the top case

20. Using a small flat head screwdriver, carefully disconnect the ribbon cable as shown in the picture. Set the top case aside.

21. Locate the Bluetooth connector attached to the optical drive in the upper right- hand corner of the unit. Gently pry up the antenna from the plastic holder and move aside.

23. Disconnect the interconnect ribbon cable as shown in the picture

Stage 6: Removing Old Optical Drive

22. Remove the screw closest to the lower left edge of the optical drive (6mm).

24. Peel back the EMI tape as shown

25. Move aside the LVDS (silver) cable, but do not disconnect it. This is to gain access to the screw underneath.

27. Locate the hard drive. Slide it out and set it aside.

Stage 7 Removing Hard Drive

26. Carefully slide the bracket forward away from the drive toward the fan in order to disengage it.

28. Remove the two 3mm screws as shown in the picture.

29. Carefully lift up the cable that runs along the edge of the optical drive.

31. Using a razor blade, remove the antenna holder from the old optical drive.

Stage 8: Removing Old Optical Drive

30. Lift up the optical drive while routing the cable underneath.

32. Very gently remove the thin metal bracket from the optical drive (BE CAREFUL. This is a difficult procedure as the metal is adhered to the drive).

33. Remove the foam tape from the optical drive interconnect cable as shown. Remove the cable from the drive.

35. Carefully set the optical drive back into the frame. Make sure you move the bracket back into place before inserting back into the frame. Route the cable back over and fit back into place carefully.

Stage 9: Installing New Optical Drive

34. Take the new optical drive out of its packaging and attach all of the items removed from the original onto the new drive. This includes the bracket, interconnect cable and foam tape as well as the Bluetooth antenna holder.

36. Reattach the 2 3mm screws.

37. Slide the hard drive back into place.

39. Reattach the interconnect cable onto the logic board.

Stage 10: Reattatching screws

38. Reroute the LVDS cable so that it is not pinched and reattach the EMI tape.

40. Reattach the screw in the bottom left-hand corner of the drive.
