THE STORY
A man looks worried while he wanders in the streets. He looks like a tramp. He gets into a flthy apartment where
he seems to live. He opens his bag and puts groceries on the table while talking to a young woman he calls Linda.
No answer. The man worries and goes to the kitchen. A young woman is tied up in there, holding a knife to her
throat. Who is she? And who is he?
Declaration of intent
Linda takes its roots in a short flm contest organized by the Quais du Polar festival. Whether they were flms
noirs or thrillers, all flms had to show a detective flm aspect.
The project later evolved into a huis clos in a post-apocalyptic world. It concentrates on the relationship between
the two main characters, a man and a woman, and we’ll later fnd out the real nature of the links that keep them
together.
We used the codes of a thriller so that perception and point of view make you think that the woman is held cap-
tive, probably kidnapped, by this unstable-looking man.
As the flm goes on, several elements sow doubts in the public’s mind: why do they cut themselves off in that
seedy apartment? Why is the woman chained? Why doesn’t she speak? Why does the man go from tender
moments to terrible moments of violence?
Answers come with the last scene...
Aesthetically, the flm shows a dark, violent, overwhelming universe, from which a few moments of weightles -
sness come out, when the main character concentrates on his thoughts... There are of tension and
moments of contemplation to allow the character (and the public) to breathe.
We also get this from the music, that contrasts with the visual darkness through its ethereal aspect. Its echoes
the character’s emotional journey, always on the razor-edge. One can interpret it as the main character’s sub-
conscious feelings.
The flm context, as well as its genre, are only excuses to serve more intimate topics:
What importance do our memories and our past in our life?
What infuence do they have on our present?
Is life as a couple a source a freedom or of imprisonment? What is it that ties us up to the loved one?
