EDITORIAL
by Germain Viatte, exhibition curator "It is well known that, throughout the world, since time began, traditional craftsmen have createdeveryday objects of extraordinary innovation and qualityvery large number of these folk craft. The Musée du Quai Branly exhibits a objects in its permanent collections. The artists of the 20thcentury were fascinated by these objects and collected them just as they had collected the "primitive arts". We also know that this traditional craftsmanship is disappearing everywhere. At the same time, a new art, design, is growing on an international scale with a professional and commercial dimension. What is the link between these two phenomena?

By looking at the activity ofSoetsu Yanagi, great defender of the traditional craftsmanship of the Far East, and of his sonSori Yanagi, pioneer of post-war design in Japan, the exhibitionThe Mingei Spirit in Japan, from folk craft to design takes up this question. From the beginning of the Meiji period, Japan experienced industrialisation and also extreme cultural, economic and political tension.Bruno Taut, Charlotte Perriand and IsamuNoguchiwere each in turn consulted to help trigger and increase Japan's exportations, and their intervention at crucial moments was decisive. The exhibition, by also giving a place to the artist-craftsmen who supported Soetsu Yanagi, presents these mixed relations with a collection of remarkable objects, both in traditional and modern terms, and concludes on their continued impact today " .
