The Hyborin Age
by Robert Ea Howrd
(Nothing in this rticle is to be considered s n ttempt to dvnce ny theory in opposition to ccepted history. It is simply  fictionl bckground for  series of fiction-stories. When I begn writing the Conn stories  few yers go, I prepred this ahistorya of his ge nd the peoples of tht ge, in order to lend him nd his sgs  greter spect of relness. And I found tht by dhering to the afctsa nd spirit of tht history, in writing the stories, it ws esier to visulize (nd therefore to present) him s  rel flesh-nd-blood chrcter rther thn  redy-mde product. In writing bout him nd his dventures in the vrious kingdoms of his Age, I hve never violted the afctsa or spirit of the ahistorya here set down, but hve followed the lines of tht history s closely s the writer of ctul historicl-fiction follows the lines of ctul history. I hve used this ahistorya s  guide in ll the stories in this series tht I hve written.) Known history begins with the wning of the Pre-Ctclysmic civiliztion, dominted by the kingdoms of Kmeli, Vlusi, Veruli, Grondr, Thule nd Commori. These peoples spoke  similr lnguge, rguing  common origin. There were other kingdoms, eqully civilized, but inhbited by different, nd pprently older rces. The brbrins of tht ge were the Picts, who lived on islnds fr out on the western ocen; the Adntens, who dwelt on  smll continent between the Pictish Islnds nd the min, or Thurin Continent; nd the Lemurins, who inhbited  chin of lrge islnds in the estern hemisphere. There were vst regions of unexplored lnd. The civilized kingdoms, though enormous in extent, occupied  comprtively smll portion of the whole plnet. Vlusi ws the western-most kingdom of
