Step 2: Before you continue, you will need to check what version of OS X you
have on your Macbook.
This can be found by:
Clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen, and selecting
About
This Mac
. A small window will then display the version number of your Mac OS X.
If the version number is 10.5.9 or lower

Step 3:
Open
System Preferences
. Under the
Internet & Wireless
section, select
Network.
Click on the
+
(plus)
symbol near the bottom left corner. For the Interface select
VPN
, and for the VPN Type select
Cisco IPSec
. Type
in
Middlesex University
for the Service Name, and then click on
Create.
This will create a VPN profile for Middlesex University, and it will appear on the list on the left-hand side. Select
it, and you will see blank fields for
Server Address
and
Account Name
. Type the server address appropriate to
your campus:
Hendon -
10.11.247.31
Cat Hill –
10.22.247.31
Archway -
10.24.247.31
Trent Park –
10.12.247.31
For the Account Name, you will need to enter your
IT User ID
.
Leave the Password section blank
. Then, click on
Authentication
Settings
, and type in the following (case-sensitive):
Shared Secret
Mh225S1Pz
Group Name
mdxStudentMob
Click on
OK
, then click on
Apply.
The setup is now complete.
Whenever you want to access the internet whilst on campus, you will need to open up
System Preferences
, go to
Network
, select the
Middlesex University
interface from the left and click on the
Connect
button. Enter your
PC/Athens login password and click OK — you should then have access to the internet.
Step 1:
Open
System Preferences
. This can be found in the Apple menu bar. Under the
Internet & Wireless
section, select
Network.
Select
Airport
from the left-hand side, and make sure it’s turned on. Click on the bar
next to Network Name, and select
dot11radio
as the network. Enter the following as the WEP (network) key:

Step 4:
On this page you will need to download:
i)
The wireless configuration file for your campus
: find the appropriate file, right-click, and save.
ii)
The VPN installer for Macs
: scroll down the page, and in the Mac section you will find a link called:
vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0230-universal-k9.dmg - for PPC and Intel - OS X 10.4 and above
Click on the link to start the file download.
Once you have both files you will need to copy them to a USB stick, ready to transfer to your Macbook.
Wireless guide for 10.5.9 and lower
Step 3:
You will need to download two files from the Middlesex University Download Server — this has to be
done on a PC/Mac with access to the internet, and
NOT
your laptop.
Type
https://bicss.mdx.ac.uk
into the address bar, and click on
Student Logon
. Enter your PC/Athens user ID
and password details to log on, then click on the
VPN
button, and then
Continue
. On the following page you
will need to tick all of the boxes, and then click on
Submit
at the bottom of the page.
The save option will be different
depending on which browser you use.
Internet Explorer: ‘Save Target As’
Firefox: ‘Save Link As’
Safari: ‘Download Linked File As’
Step 5:
Copy both files onto your Macbook. Double-click on the
vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0230-universal-k9.dmg
file to mount the drive to your desktop; then, double-click on the
installer package within the drive to start the installation.

Step 6:
After the installation has completed you should have the
VPNClient
file in your
Applications
folder;
double-click on this to run the VPN. Once it has finished loading, click on the
Import
button, and browse to
where you saved the Middlesex configuration file on your Macbook (e.g.—
mdxStudent-Wireless-HE.pcf
).
Click on the mounted disk, and then double-click on
Cisco VPN Client.mpkg
to start the installation
Double-click on
VPNClient
to start the program; Once the VPN
loads, click on Connect and enter your account details — you will
need to do this every time you want internet access on campus
Select the configuration file within the VPN Client, and click on
the
Connect
button in the top-left corner. Enter your PC/Athens
user ID and password details when prompted — you should then
be connected, and will have access to the internet.
