The expected ROI of a grid feed in photovoltaic system (PV) that uses the grid
at night as backup only is between 5 to 7 years (UK fgures).
The ROI fgure will increase slightly if a stand alone (island) system is installed.
A stand alone system incorporates batteries which store the energy produced
during the day by the PV system. This stored energy can then be used for night
time consumption through-out the system. The exact ROI will depend on which
system is installed and how the energy generated is consumed.
The greatest savings on a standalone system can be made in buildings that
have a high daytime consumption such as offces, workshops, government
buildings, underground carparks, supermarkets, shopping malls and airports.
The daily consumptions can be further reduced by also investing in replacement
LED lighting and the PV system sized accordingly, in this way, even greater
savings can be made.
