Crime Stats in North Texas: Patterns are Hard to Identify
Major cities likeHoustonandDallashave seen an increase in certain kinds of violent crimes, even in the midst of general crime rates that are falling overall. The same is true in smaller towns and cities across the Lone Star State, except for one particular area: North Texas.
According to the Dallas Morning News, several North Texas cities have seen a spike in violent crime without a correspondingdeĐrease iŶ geŶeral Đriŵe. PoliĐe offiĐials saLJ that soŵe of the Ŷuŵďers are ŵisleadiŶg. TheLJ also saLJ it’s hard to establish any reliable patterns at this point.
One case in point is Garland. The northeast city of 227,000 experienced a 10.6 percent increase in violent crime for 2015. Rapes were up 11.5 percent while aggravated assaults rose nearly 19 percent last year. Unfortunately, the overall crime rate dipped by just 1.7 percent, as compared to 6.6 percent in Irving. Another aberration is McKinney, a city that saw an overall drop in crime of more than 1 percent despite a 4.3 percent increase in total population.
In short, the crime rates in North Texas were all over the board in 2015. Some communities witnessed an increase in all sorts of violent crimes while others saw one violent crime go up and another go down. There seems to be no particular rhyme or reason behind the trends. One thing is for sure, though: Crime is still something to be concerned about, no matter where in Texas a person lives.
Criminals and Population Density
One of the significant problems police officials are facing in North Texas is the concentration of criminals according to a loĐal area’s populatioŶ deŶsitLJ. For edžaŵple, poliĐe offiĐials iŶ CarrolltoŶ ŵaiŶtaiŶ that the vast ŵajority of crimes in that community are perpetrated by a small group of individuals. The city reported a 21 percent increase in robberies, but there were only 64 such offenses in the community in 2014.
Police Chief Rex Redden told the Dallas Morning News that his agency was able to drastically reduce robbery rates in Carrollton through 2014 by being more aggressive and presenting a more visible presence. Still, criminals outside of Carrollton may have been emboldened to commit robberies within the city in 2015.

Protect Yourself against Crime
Looking at the numbers from theDallas Morning Newsshould make one thing absolutely clear: Local police can only do so much to keep a lid on crime. Whether you live in North Texas, the central part of the state, or down along the Gulf coast, your most valuable advocate in the fight against crime is you. The decisions you make about your safety will determine how well you protect both your family and property.
Consider thieves who target parked cars as just one example. Criminals look for unlocked cars more often than not, preferring not to make the noise associated with forcible entry. Therefore, the simple decision to lock your car goes a long way toward preventing theft of contents. It is also a wise idea to not leave anything of value in your car when you park it. The same principles can be applied to your house.
Burglars dislike alarm systems because these make noise, they may be connected to monitoring centers, and they may includeremote video surveillance cameras. One of the easiest and most effective ways you can reduce your chances of being victimized by a burglar is to install monitored home security. Monitronics makes doing so possible throughout Texasvia our network of authorized dealers.
