Desire and Passion: 2 Things Needed to Be Successful Trucker Becoming a successful truck driver obviouslystarts with going to CDL schooland earning a license. You cannot drive a truck in the U.S. without a CDL. Succeeding in the trucking industry also involves a certain kind of mindset and the ability to work independently. But there are two qualities of successful truckers that are rarely talked about: desire and passion. There is no job worth doing that does not involve at least some challenges on a daily basis. There is no job worth doing that allows workers to skate through with absolutely no effort. Every job requires some part of those that do it. Trucking is no different. Still, the demands of trucking are vastly different from a lot of other professions. Without desire and passion, it is too easy to lose sight of why a trucker got into driving in the first place. Then it becomes just another job.
A Desire to Do Something Important We all find ourselves in a position of wanting to do something truly important at some point in our lives. Indeed, some people choose their career paths based on that very principle. What you may not know is that truckers are vitally important to the U.S. economy. Trucking touches nearly every economic sector from retail to construction to industry and infrastructure. A desire to do something truly meaningful is one of the things that drives truckers to keep doing what they do. Experienced truck drivers know that they are providing a critical service from the moment they completed CDL school. They know that the economy rides on their trailers, and a collapse of the trucking industry would mean a collapse of the American way of life. How interesting that there are so many people who do not consider trucking as important as other things, like healthcare for example. But consider this: there would be no healthcare system or infrastructure if it were not for the trucks that carry medical supplies, prescriptions, and equipment across the country. Trucking is just as important to our economy as any other profession.
A Passion for the Road To say that truckers spend a lot of time on the road is to state the obvious. Therefore, the most successful truckers have a passion for the road. They have a passion to see new places, experience new settings, and meet new people. It is part and parcel of spending hundreds of days per year traveling. Older truckers are retiring by the thousands each year. And while many of them appreciate the fact that they will be able to spend more time at home with family, it is not uncommon for them to also say they will miss being on the road. There is something quite unique about a career spent traveling, particularly in the arena of truck driving where drivers belong to an elite club consisting of members with a special bond between them. It can be difficult to transition from driving 500 miles a day to sitting on the front porch watching the traffic go by. That passion for the road tends to stay in the truĐker’s ďlood long after retirement. Still, there comes a time when every trucker has to hang up his or her keys and relax. Do You Have What It Takes?
