Doctors and Employment: 5 Reasons You May Not Have Been Hired The current doctor shortage makes it easy for us to assume that finding a job would be simple. Such assumptions are made worse by the fact that residents begin seeing a steady stream of employer inquiries in the final months of their residencies. Yet more than one doctor has been terribly disappointed after having been rejected by an employer that he or she thought was a sure thing. It is true that certain things within the doctor's control can jeopardize hiring possibilities. However, there are an equal number of things the doctor has no control over. If you have recently been turned down by an employer you thought for sure would hire you, here are five reasons you may not have gotten the job: 1. You Are an Unknown Entity There is a lot of truth to the old adagethat says, ͞It’snot what you know but who you know.͟ The reality is that, between two equally qualified candidates vying for the same job, a hiring manager is more likely to choose one he or she knows over one who is a stranger. The best way to overcome being that unknown entity is to make the effort to network as much as possible during residency. Volunteer locally; attend industry seminars and presentations; introduce yourself to as many hospital staff as you can. 2. Hiring from Within A normal tendency among hiring managers is to hire a doctor from within the organization whenever possible. For example, consider the hospital with an open hospitalist position in the pediatrics department. If presented with several candidates who have never worked for the hospital along with a doctor who is currently employed in the emergency department, the hiring manager is likely to look more favorably at the ED doctor. 3. Priorities Were Changed Any HR manager can tell you stories about how often hiring priorities change. This is especially true in healthcare. Management may call for certain hiring targets today only to turn around and change their minds three weeks from now. It could be that you were not hired because someone at the facility you applied to changed the hiring priorities. 4. Budget Constraints Hand-in-hand with changing priorities are budget constraints. There may be a healthcare facility looking to add a doctor, ready to begin their search in the third quarter of the fiscal year. The finance department may derail that search once they start preparing next year's budget during the fourth quarter. Delaying the hire or eliminating the position altogether may be implemented as a money-saving strategy.

5. Not a Good Fit A skilled hiring manager in any industry looks beyond the education and work-related experience to find the right candidates. Those chosen to fill open positions often need to have certain kinds of personalities to fit in with the workplace environment. Your not being hired may have nothing to do with your skills or qualifications. It might just mean that your personality does not fit well with that particular facility. Failure to get a job you have applied for is reason to consider whether things you control can be improved on. If you are confident all those things are in order, the reason you were not hired could be related to something you have no control over. Do not get discouraged. Keep on applying and interviewing until you land a position. They are out there for the taking. You might even ask that facility that did not hire you what you could do to improve your chances next time.
