GM Recalls Vehicles for Fire Risk
General Motors is recalling 1.5 million vehicles for potential fire hazard. General Motors said vehicles with heated washer-fluid systems had the risk of catching fire; hence they are recalling these vehicles. The recalls will affect 2006 to 2009 model Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, GMCs, Hummers and Saturns. GM had recalled its vehicles in August 2008 for similar problems but since there are new reports of fi res GM decided to recall again. Jeff Boyer, GM's executive director of safety says "The number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, but still we want our customers to have complete peace of mind." GM wishes to provide the best possible safety to its customers who pride themselves in owning a GM brand; as it plans to remove the heated washer-fluid systems from its vehicles and is also ready to pay the owners / leasers.
This will result in some outflow of cash from General Motors who recently bounced back from bankruptcy after U.S. Treasury Departments funding. Someway it's going to affect the business as the number of vehicles to be recalled is huge. Majority of these vehicles are from United States while others are fro m Canada, Mexico and elsewhere.
"Time and again General Motors have proved themselves that they are true champions and can come out of difficult situations. We expect the same from General Motors even after this latest setback", says Anthony Tribunella, Expert and Director of Operations at Auto Relief Group.
The recall was issued as a response to the report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the airbag of the SRX particularly on the right rear passenger area of the vehicle is having a problem with its launching mechanism. With this, the passenger on that area might be left unprotected in the event of frontal and side crashes.
In theGM Recallsummary issued by the NHTSA, the administration determined that the airbags in the 2011 Cadillac SRX is programmed to turn the airbag mounted on the right-side-roof-rail off when the passenger sensing system sense that the passenger seat in front is unoccupied. This simply means that when the front passenger seat is unoccupied and the rear right passenger seat is, the airbag will not
automatically launch in the event of crashes leaving the passenger exposed to possible injuries brought by the collision.
