Retail Point of Sale Systems are Too Complicated, Right? Nope.Mahatma Gandhi so eloquently said that, “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”Isn’t that so true? As a small business owner, you’ve proven that you have the guts to go out on your own and take a huge risk. You’ve put it all on the line to live out your dream and to come out stronger and better for it. However, within the same circumstances in which we thrive, we can sometimes be our worst liability.Several years ago I worked at a thriving CPA firm that served thousands of clients come tax season. While their skills at accounting, financial planning, and investments were unparalleled, their technology was grossly behind the times. The hallways were jammed packed with client files, the receptionist kept track of all of the appointments in a notebook, and they would handwrite in the client’s file how long each CPA spent with their client. Not only did this waste countless hours and money on materials, but it impeded progress to gain new clients since they could barely manage billing and storing information for the ones they already had.Well, after much nagging, snickering, and lecturing (and most importantly the partner who was opposed to upgrading software retired), they finally listened to me. The files in the hallway were scanned and recycled, appointments were saved on the server, timers were implemented in the software and automatically calculated billing, and of course e filing revolutionized paying taxes and receiving timely refunds.Unfortunately, so many small retail businesses are in the same boat as this CPA firm. Their point of sale system is terribly oldfashioned causing them to waste valuable time looking for inventory that doesn’t exist, calculating multiple reports, and spending a ton of money for a web designer to manage their website. These small business owners are spread so thin just maintaining their records that there is little time to brainstorm ideas to actually grow their company to reach its real life potential.I know, point of sale software systems can be scary and sometimes it can seem so much simpler to stick to what you know. Heck, if it’s worked for 50 years, it will work for 50 more, right? Butthe best point of sale systemscan make transactions seamless to please your customers and keep them coming back. They can help you manage your online store and track inventory and customer profiles. You’ll be able to process
payments from cash, checks, and credit cards and even monitor layaway merchandise or partial payments. And best of all, you can effortlessly view uptotheminute reports on what employee is excelling, what product is in demand, what products you need to reorder, and identify trends in your company. With all of this data right at your fingertips, you can make the best decisions for your business and plan for future growth. When you started your company, you probably said to yourself a million times, “I CAN do this!” When it comes to updating how you manage your business, repeat that same mantra. It takes courage to be an entrepreneur, and it also takes courage to try out new point of sale software, which can change the way you run your company. But you CAN do this.
