Truck Driving One of the Most Common Jobs for 35+ Years If someone were to ask you to list the five most common jobs in America, what would be on your list? National Public Radio (NPR) recently compiled some fascinating data from the U.S. Census Bureau regarding the employment marketplace in America since 1978. It turns out that truck driving has consistently been one of the most common jobs for over 35 years. To be fair, driving appears prominent in the statistics partly because the Census Bureau lumps together all sorts of truck and van drivers. The category includes over-the-road truckers, regional truckers, local haulers, delivery van drivers, and so on. Even so, the statistics do show just how much commercial vehicles contribute to the overall U.S. economy.

By the Numbers The NPR numbers account for all 50 states and the most prominent job categories as considered by the Census Bureau. We will not give you 35+ years of data on all 50 states, but we do want to point out some interesting highlights:  Truck Driving/Delivery–truck driving and delivery category has been the most prominent since 1978 in The Pennsylvania, Oregon, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and Idaho. More than two dozen additional states counted truck driving and delivery near the top during the same period.  Transitioning to Trucking–Several states were dominated by other job sectors in the late 70s and early 80s, only to transition to trucking and delivery as the dominant category now. Alabama is a good example. Machine operations and manufacturing led the way in Alabama through the 1980s. However, the state shifted to truck driving and delivery in the 1990s. It is still dominated by truck driving today.

 Other Occupations–The NPR data clearly shows there are only a small handful of states in which truck driving and delivery jobs have not been consistently near the top. New York is one example, where secretaries and allied medical dominates. New Mexico and Massachusetts are two others. The statistics clearly show how important truck driving and delivery jobs are to workers in nearly every state. That makes it even more ironic that the trucking industry is desperately short of drivers right now. There are plenty of jobs and not enough people to fill them. Rise and Fall It is one thing to look at the NPR data as a source of amusement, it is another thing to stop and analyze it for just a moment. NPR provides some of that analysis for us, explaining why some job categories have weakened over the years while trucking remains strong. As one example, NPR mentions a loss of farming jobs since the late 1970s. Agricultural job losses are not because Americans are eating less. It is because technology makes it easier to farm larger swathes of land with fewer workers. What used to take an entire crew of workers can now be accomplished with a single machine operated by the farmer. Another example is secretarial work, which, during the peak of America's manufacturing days, was big. Nonetheless, technology changed things in that arena as well. The introduction of the personal computer meant fewer secretaries were needed for big business. Truck driving remains strong because there is no other way to move freight as cheaply and efficiently as is currently done with trucks. Also, consider the fact that truck driving is not yet automated. Truck driving is, and will remain, one of the most common jobs in America because we need the services trucks provide.
