Why You Cannot Always Get the Hairstyle You Want If we collected a dollar for every straight-locked person who wants curly hair, Salt Lake City would have demonstrably fewer greenbacks floating around andCurl Co.would be a lot richer. The opposite is also true. We talk to a lot of clients who have naturally curly hair but would prefer it to be straight. Yet in the immortal words of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, ͞you can't always get what you want.͟While Mick Jagger was crooning about the lost era of the 1960s, hair stylists in America's biggest cities were on the verge of entering a new era of their own an era in which the best stylists would go on to become celebrities in their own right. Some 30 years later, it seems we all want that celebrity look when we sit down in the stylist's chair. So why doesn't it always work out that way? Why do we go to the salon hoping to come out looking like Scarlett Johansson only to discover we look more like the college student next door? It boils down to working with what nature gives you.
Straight vs. Curly Hair The whole idea of not being able to get that style you want covers everything from texture to color. We can use straight versus curly hair to explain what this is all about. If you have curly hair that you want to be made straight or vice versa, the stylist has to do certain things to overcome what nature has given you. For example, someone with naturally curly hair needs to use chemical relaxers in order to overcome those curls. In essence, you have to overcome genetics to produce straight locks from what is naturally curly hair.
Salt Lake City salons use a variety of chemical relaxers graded by level. The highest levellevel 3will transform even the most aggressive girls into hair that is as straight as a ruler. Level 2 gets rid of most of the curls but leaves a subtle wave. Finally, a level 1 relaxer is the least effective, which is why we do not use it on extremely curly hair. As well as chemical relaxers work, there is always a trade-off. The more aggressive the relaxing is, the more damage is actually done to the hair itself. Most people with extremely curly hair notice a drop-off in volume as a result. This is one of the reasons the look you see in the magazine or on television may not be the look you end up with. If you do not have enough volume to start with, you may not have enough after going straight to create the look you're after. Nature Doesn't Quit The other consideration to remember is that nature does not quit. Even if your stylist is able to perfectly pull off the Scarlett Johansson look you are hoping for, it only takes just a few weeks for nature to begin reclaiming her rightful position. You'll notice subtle curls once again as your hair grows out. If you want to remain straight, you will have to use a heat straightener at home. The reality is that you cannot always get what you want from a hairstyle because nature has a say. You can't always achieve a naturally curly look with straight hair, and you cannot always produce the straightest of locks with curly hair. SLC salons like ours do the best we can with every head of hair we work on, but what nature has already gifted you with has to be accounted for as well. In the end, Mick and Keith were right.
