Car Seat Safety for Babies
Your first days at home with your newborn can be full of visits from family and friends, but soon you will
be venturing out and about to the pediatrician, grocery store, general errands and even road trips,
which will require figuring out how to safely transport your infant in the car. Here are some tips to
ensure your trips are both safe and enjoyable.
Car Seats:
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a rear-facing car seat the the first two years of a
child's life. Babies grow quickly and it can sometimes be a problem finding a car seat that will fit the
child for those two years.
The Graco SnugRide Click Connect 40 (http://www.gracosafety.com/.) is the only rear facing infant car
seat suitable for infants up to the age of two bacause it has an adjustible base with several incline
positions to allow the most leg room for your growing baby. It also features a Simply Safe Adjust harness
system which parents can easily adjust with one hand a the baby grows.
Proper installation of the carseat is imperative and many pediatric clinics, fire departments and other
community centers offer installation by certified child passenger safety technicians. Ask your doctor for
a recommendation.
To find locations of inspection stations for baby car seats, visit the National Highway Safety Traffic Safety
Administration at www.nhtsa.gov.
Entertainment
Babies love adult interaction, so try to have someone sit next to the baby in the carseat. As your baby
grows, the entertainment can go fron funny faces and singing songs to word games, like identifying your
babies nose, ears, and tummy.
Music help to develop linguistic and motor skills as they sing along. Alway bring along a favorite CD of
baby's favorite tunes and sing along on the ride.
Sun Protection
Try shading the rear window of your auto to protect baby's eyes and to make her trip more comfortable.
On long trips, remember the baby needs to stretch their legs, just like you do. Take advantage of
stopping/rest areas for feeding/diaper changes and a little exercise. Pack a blanket if the weather is nice
and spread out for some wiggle time before getting back on the road. Hopefully, once back in the car
both you and your baby will feel refreshed and ready for more.
It is important to protect your baby at all times with a Baby Monitor. We recommend the BabySense V
Infant Monitor. You can buy it at babysensellc.com
