e-INFRASTRUCTURE:
Building Global Virtual Research Communities
The world of research is undergoing a revolution underpinned by e-Infrastructures, a
combination of ICT-based resources: networks, computing and storage systems, and
data infrastructure. Advanced e-Infrastructures like the world-leading pan-European
research network GÉANT, the Grids of computing power and on-line repositories of
scienti c data enable new ways of collaborating and sharing resources independently of
geographical location. These e-Infrastructures are the key drivers for emerging virtual
global research communities. By enabling scienti c excellence and productivity they
increase social and economic wellbeing in Europe.
Linking the ideas at the speed of light: GÉANT
GÉANT2, the most advanced international research network in
the world o ers the scientists the possibility to store, transmit and
analyse more data than ever before. 30 million research and educa-
tion users of GÉANT2 in more than 30 countries across Europe are
interconnected to other world regions enabling global research
collaboration.

Sharing the best scienti c resources: e-Science grids
Grid infrastructures make unprecedented amounts of computing
power available to scientists by pooling distributed resources across
>_Europe and beyond in a secure and reliable way. Using grids helps
researchers to solve complex scienti c problems more e ectively
and e ciently than it was possible before.

Accessing knowledge: Scienti c data
By expanding scienti c data infrastructures, more multidisciplinary,
cohesive research communities are being created. This will allow for
a greater dissemination of information and give more researchers
access to a larger amount of new and pre-existing data.

Designing future facilities: Novel e-infrastructure
European scienti c communities need new e-Infrastructures to
remain at the forefront of the global research. The studies for design
and creation of new research infrastructures of pan-European dimen-
sion will pave the way to unique services to scientists, thus enlarging
the communities and structuring the European Research Area.

Innovating the scienti c process: global virtual research
communities
By their ability to solve complex problems, remove geographic dis-
tance and make optimal use of expensive instruments, ICT-based
e-Infrastructures are changing the way research communities ad-
dress key societal issues, such as energy, healthcare or climate
change.
