I. Compréhension
1. 4 people are present : Father Flood, Eilis, her sister named Rose, and her mother.
2. The main topic of the conversation is about the opportunity for Eilis to find a better job in the United States.
3. a) Eilis is currently working at Miss Kelly’s shop where is getting very low-paid for her qualifications.
b) Before Father Flood’s visit, she had intended to go to England to look for a job.
c) She didn’t carry out her plans because she is not the one who makes the decision : first, the boys (probably her brothers) said it wasn’t the best time, then they added that she might only get a factory work and finally, her mother refused to let her go.
4. a) Father Flood came to try to arrange Eilis’s move to the United States, so she could find a better job there.
b) Father Flood thought that moving to the United States would be a good opportunity for Eilis to find a more qualified job, especially at her age. He even suggested that she worked in his parish, given her qualities. He argued that she would be safe and not totally lost if she moved to Brooklyn because many Irish people live there and because there are many activities to do.
c) Father Flood’s general mission consists in several involvements such as helping people, trying to lead them along the way, visiting the sick, advising them when they have to make choices.
5. a) Rose and her mother are thinking of sending Eilis to Brooklyn where Father Flood works. It seemed that Eilis’s mother was only worried about the long distance. “That’s the only thing.”
(l. 18) Rose’s silence surprised Eilis the most “Rose, normally
so good at moving the conversation along if they had a visitor, also said nothing.” (l. 22).
b) Eilis has mixed feelings. She is very surprised that they decide about her future in such a way, “wanting her sister to ask a question
or make a comment, but Rose appeared to be in a sort of dream.” (l. 30) but at the same time, she already feels that she will have to soon leave her house. “she would need to remember this room, her sister, this scene, as though from a distance.” (l. 33)
6. Eilis thinks of America as a country where people earn a lot of money “people who
went to America could become rich.” (l. 51). She thinks that contrarily to England, people who emigrate to America don’t even visit their families across the Atlantic ocean because of the long journey. To Eilis, people who stay in England are closer to their families than people who move to America “ no one who went to America missed home.” (l. 52).
7. Proposition de traduction
Durant les jours qui suivirent, personne n’évoqua la visite de Père Flood ni la possibilité pour Eilis d’aller vivre à Brooklyn. Le silence lui-même mena Eilis à croire que sa mère et Rose en avaient parlé et approuvaient ce voyage. Elle n’avait jamais envisagé d’aller en Amérique. Beaucoup de personnes qu’elle connaissait étaient partis pour l’Angleterre et revenaient souvent pour Noël ou pendant l’été.
II. Expression
Sujet 1. Imagine the conversation between Eilis and her mother before she leaves to go abroad.
- Eilis a certainement des questions à propos de sa nouvelle vie (quand reverrait-elle sa mère et Rose, si elle leur manquera, etc) - Sa mère la rassure et l’encourage (travail mieux payé, sécurité dans la communauté, Père Flood est de la famille, etc) - Décrire les émotions qui animent chacune (tristesse, peur du voyage, de la nouvelle vie, etc).
Sujet 2. We make choices everyday. What may influence us?
- Expliquer ce qu’implique un choix (plusieurs possibilités, décisions, etc) - Exposer les différents types d’influence (personnes de notre entourage, situations dans lesquelles nous nous trouvons, les imprévus, le temps limité, ce qu’on aime et ce qu’on aime pas, les émotions ressenties enthousiasme, hésitation, réticence, etc) - Donner quelques exemples
