I – COMPRÉHENSION DE L’ÉCRIT (10 points)

DOCUMENT A A. B: Married woman B. The narrator plans on travelling across America by herself. "The day I decided to embark on a cross country road trip”; "A lot of people have asked me why I am travelling by myself across the country." C.

1. Determined: "It got into my head early on that that if I didn't witness the world around me, I would never know anything beyond myself"

 Independent: "I wanted time to myself. I wanted an adventure for myself. I wanted a trip that was wholly mine."  Unconventional: "I was born with wanderlust in my veins"  2. She alludes to the idea that she inherited this adventurous side from her ancestors. G. The narrator speaks about her ancestors who were brave and embarked on a new journey to America. This is the American spirit, because that is how America was founded. By traveling on her own throughout America, she is encompassing this American spirit that her Ancestors also had.

Explain in your own words why cars no longer use Route 66.

Cars no longer use Route 66 because too many cars were using it and there was a lot of traffic so interstates have been built (5 different interstates). The building of those interstates solved the traffic problem but now people only use those interstates and no longer Route 66.

J. What was done to preserve Route 66? Quote three elements from the text.

In 2007, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added the motels of Route 66 to the list of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places. In 2008, Route 66 was added to The World Monuments Fund’s Watch List of endangered sites. When the article was written in 2009, Megan Gambino also adds that representatives from 8 States throughout the U.S. were creating a national nonprofit organization “Route 66 Alliance”.

K. What does the writer mean when she says: “The highway needs […] awareness and a national voice” (ll. 16‐17)?

The writer means that funds need to be dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Route 66, that there needs to be awareness campaigns so that people become aware of the importance of Route 66 (and that it used to have), and that the Route 66 issue needs to be brought to a national level (the government needs to do start acting for its restoration).

L. According to the article, why is it important to preserve Route 66? Explain in your own words.

According to the article, it is essential to preserve Route 66 as it is not only a road that cars can drive on but it is also full of markers of American History.

DOCUMENT C

M. What image of Route 66 does this mural give? Justify.

This mural gives a positive and promising image of Route 66: it depicts happy and young people who are singing, dancing, playing music, and partying.

N. What possible functions could this mural have? Give two functions.

1‐ the first function this mural could have is to remind people of the popularity of Route 66 ‐ popularity through Elvis ( a singer), but also through the young people having fun – and to make sure that people remember that Route 66 used to be commonly used.

2‐ The second function this mural could have is to perpetuate the memory of the rock’n’roll era.

3‐ Another function could be to attract tourists.

O. Use the three documents to explain the mythical dimension of the road in America

In document A, the narrator introduces the reader to the idea of American spirit. The narrator believes that if she “didn't witness the world around” her, she “would never know anything beyond” herself. The mythical dimension of the road, as seen in document A, is that the road can offer valuable and memorable experiences. Much like in document A, document B tells us that route 66 is full of American history, which gives an image that again, by hitting the open road, you can make valuable experiences. Document C helps to summarize these ideas. The mural depicts young people during the height of the rock’n’roll era who are having fun on route 66. Once again, this is a depiction of the American spirit and how traveling by roads can help connect you with (and travel through) history, create beautiful memories, and allow you to learn.

P. Use the three documents to show that Americans have a sentimental relationship with the road.

Document A shows that the narrator is going on a road trip across America because she believes that she will gain something valuable, even if it doesn’t change her. Document B shows that some people are worried about the future of Route 66 and that organizations are working to preserve its historical aspects because the writer of Document B insists on the fact that Route 66 is more than a road and that it actually represents different parts of American History. Document C gives an image on the side of a building in a Texas town, showing their pride for what route 66 used to be. All of these provide evidence of American sentimental values towards the road.

II – EXPRESSION ÉCRITE (10 points)

1. Quelques pistes : Write to the businessman about possible business opportunities for supporting the cause. Perhaps they could help restore certain sites and use it as a tourist attraction, perhaps the businessman could help make his company look better by being philanthropic. 2. Il fallait ici donner votre point de vue et on s'attendait également à une argumentation construite: introduction/ développement/ conclusion, et il fallait donc utiliser des connecteurs logiques Vous pouviez ici utiliser le texte et vos expériences personnelles. Quelques pistes: understand that all cultures are different/ cultures shape our vision of the world / traveling helps you get acquainted with those cultures so you understand them better.

To understand the world, you must experience it. Sometimes, reading books or watching a film about a country, city, or place is not enough. You must go and meet real people, experience their culture and truly take in this part of the world. Write about how if you never go beyond your city, you won’t know anything but that culture.

Cette expression était directement liée au document B: il fallait donc s'assurer d'avoir bien compris tous les aspects de ce dernier. On voulait ici vous faire parler du rôle de l'histoire (et du devoir de mémoire) sur notre identité.

Quelques pistes : This quote is about American history. What we are today is because of what happened in the past. If you do not know your past, then how do you know who you are? This is what this quote means.
