lindcont19@mymsmc.la.edu
Are you communicating effectively?
It might seem counter intuitive to think that in order to be a good
communicator you need to be a good listener but what do you think
would happen if you didn’t listen or understand what the other person
was saying? The real core of communication is understanding where
the other person is coming from. Here are some tips to help improve
your communication skills with others:
Be aware of your own biases.
Active Listening: Give your attention, body language, stay tuned in, make eye con-
tact, and don’t plan your response while someone is talking- you might miss something
important. Repeat back what you think you heard the person say.
Ask Questions: Maybe you missed a detail or not quite understand the other person’s
point of view. It is important that you have a clear understanding of what is going on.
Be aware of your tone when asking questions.
Learning to listen during conversations and being aware of the cues (verbal and non-
verbal) will help you be a better communicator.

If you are still having a difficult time communicating with others or have anything else you
would like to speak about, contact a counselor at CPS. Remember, our
services are always FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.
