Theinterrogationsofthiscoursewillrangeoverawidespectrumofsuper‐heroicisminmultiple areasofAmericancultureandwillconcentrateonsuchissuesas:depictionsofrace,gender,and sexuality;concernsofhistory,origins,family,andbelonging;understandingsofnationandcitizenship; violenceinfilm/tvandinculture;technology;materialismandconsumerism(merchandising,tie‐ins, toys,collectibles);excess;theoreticalissuesoftherealandsimulacra;fanculture;thepolitical consequencesofescapeandfantasy;activism;campaesthetics;questionsoforiginalityandrepetition;the enormousfinancialinvestmentsoftheHollywoodstudioblockbuster;thepoliticsandeconomicsofthe sequel;representationsofheroismoutsideoftherealmofthe“super”(suchastheNavySealswhokilled OsamaBinLaden,9/11firefighters,teachers,sportsfigures).Tocarryouttheseinvestigations,thiscourse willutilizeavarietyoftextualartifacts,includingprint(comics,shortstory,novel,essay,memoir, journalism),film,television,advertisements,popularmusic,consumerproducts(clothing,collectibles, toys),YouTube,videogames,andtherecentdigitalarchivesofcomics,andwillrelyuponanactiveand engagedparticipatorycultureintheclassroom. Certainover‐archingconcernswillshadowanddirectourweeklyconversations.Whileeach weekwillbedevotedtoaspecificandparticularaspectofthesuperhero’splacewithintheAmerican Imaginary,wewillalsoconsidersomekeyandrelevantaspectsofAmericanculture,history, identification,suchasAmerica’scomplexrelationshipwithorigins,andthewaysinwhichAmerica’s foundingrootsinPuritanspiritualityaswellastherecentdramaticriseinEvangelicismcontributetoan understandingofthesuperherothroughquestionsofsalvationandnation:Whosecommunityisbeing protectedandsaved?Whatdoesitmeantosaveorbesaved?
