Lesson Plan: Earthquakes M. Bacon
Ongoing Activity: (The students will be working on this project as the unit progresses; they will make changes, add the necessary detail, as they learn more about earthquakes.)
The students will create a 3-dimensional model of an area that has frequent earthquakes, i.e., California. This model must demonstrate a good understanding of the unit objectives that relate specifically to earthquakes.
Objectives: Thestudents will demonstrate their understanding of the following:
1.The layers of the Earth 2.How the topmost layer of the Earth is moving Convection currents and mantle Theory of continental drift Sea-floor spreading Theory of plate tectonics 3.Types of stress on Earth 4.Types of faults 5.Types of seismic waves 6.Determining and monitoring earthquake risks 7.Strengths and damage of earthquakes 8.Earthquake preparedness, reduce earthquake hazards
Lesson Plan:
1.In order to meet the above objectives, the student will read selected parts of the assigned textbook, [Inside Earth, Prentice Hall, Science Explorer] and answer questions from those selections.
