Teacher Name: ___Ms. Leslie Harrison_harrisonl@prsd.ab.caCourse Rationale:Science programs provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to become productive and responsible members of society. The goal of scientific literacy is to develop in students the science-related knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to solve problems and make decisions and, at the same time, to help students become lifelong learners who maintain their sense of wonder about the world around them. Diverse learning experiences within the science program provide students with opportunities to explore, analyze and appreciate the interrelationships among science, technology, society and the environment and to develop understandings that will affect their personal lives, their careers and their futures. Course General Objectives:Unit A: Investigating Properties of Matter Overview: Students will study the properties of chemicals.They will study how the classification of these chemicals has helped scientist understand all the different chemicals and chemical reactions that occur.Students will discover that chemicals are present in everything around them.Students will also learn how to handle chemicals safely at work, school and home. Unit B: Energy Transfer Technologies Overview:Students will learn about the various ways that energy is transferred, focussing on heat transference. Unit C: From Life to Lifestyle Overview:Students will begin to understand that all organisms, including humans, are made up of cells that need energy to survive. Students will use microscopes to learn about and identify cell structure and function. Human organ systems will be investigated, in order to learn how these systems interact to maintain internal balance. Unit D:Matter and Energy in the Biosphere Overview:Students will discover how the Sun’s energy is captured by plants and converted to chemical energy.They will be able to describe how this energy is converted and passed through the food web.The discovery of population interaction as well as environmental problems created by humans will also be large topics.

Course Evaluation: Projects/assignments/labs -40% Quizzes, Chapter Tests and Unit Tests – 30% Final Exams –30% General Expectations: Requirements for Success in Science 24 Attendance is one of the most important factors for academic success. It is expected that you come to class every day, on time, with the materials you require for class. All notes, handouts, reading assignments missed due to absence are your responsibility.Please make arrangements with myself or with a classmate to obtain missed materials.Should a quiz, lab or test be missed, you will be allowed to make it up at a time and place that is convenient for both you and the teacher Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class; on or before the due date. Late assignments will generally not be accepted for marks once the assignment has been graded and handed back to the class. Extenuating circumstances such as medical reasons may result in an extension, subject to the teacher’s discretion Mature and considerate behaviour is expected in class. Students are expected to be respectful and remain quiet and attentive whenever the teacher is talking. Be sure to ask questions to clarify concepts. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with me to obtain any extra help you may need throughout the course. If you feel uncomfortable asking questions in front of the class or approaching me directly, you can simply e-mail your question to me and I will get back to you with the answer.
