in ‘83  one of my fondest memories in my career. Michael will be missed and may he rest in peace.” !Lil Wayne:“I per sonally can’t believe it. But it’s more unfortunate for the world of music. My love goes out to his family. A sad day in history, not just music.” !Beyonce Knowles: “This is such a tragic loss and a terrible day. The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music. He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop! Life is not about how many breaths you take, but about how many moments in life that take your breath away. For anyone who has ever seen, felt or heard his art, we are all honoured to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you, Michael.” !Chris Brown: “Michael Jackson is the reason why I do music and why I am an entertainer. I am devastated by this great loss, and I will con tinue to be humbled and inspired by his legacy. My prayers are with his fami ly. Michael will be deeply missed, but never forgot ten. He’s the greatest ... the best ever. No one will ever be better.” !Diddy:“MJ showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He
barriers, he changed radio formats! With music, he made it possible for people like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to impact the mainstream world. His legacy is unparalleled, Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.” !Ludacris:“If it were not for Michael Jackson,1 would not be where or who I am today. His Music and Legacy will live on Forever. Prayers to the family. R.I.P.” !Solange Knowles: “Thank you Michael Jackson for being my FIRST of many! My moth er took me to my FIRST concert. I was only two years old. I fell in love.”
es, it’s a debatable Y question and various opinions will be voiced over the next few months. But I would put the blame on Michael Jackson’s man ager and those responsible for virtually getting a ‘sick man out of bed’ and preparing him for a gruelling marathon session. Here was a fragile guy being asked to do the impossible? Why? Of course, it’s for the sake of money, and defi nitely to fatten the wallets of several unscrupulous people in the showbusiness world. Doctors showed concern about Jackson’s health; they were also worried about his skin cancer, but the singer’s spokesman kept issuing statements that Jackson is in great health. How aburd! Such folks should be sued by the singer’s family. Even if he did survive till opening night, the chances are he would have collapsed onstage through sheer exhaus tion. I’ve seen Michael Jackson perform at his Dangerous con cert in Singapore and his act was so energised that I believe one needs to be more than one hundred percent fit to go through such action. Well, the greed for money has taken away from our midst a great performer. As reports of Michael Jackson’s final days began to emerge, it became clear that the singer had been struggling in recent weeks against a dependency on prescription drugs and the demands of rehearsing for what should have been a 50date concert series in London . For the past two months,

!Madonna:“I can’t stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other mem bers of his family. God bless”. !Britney Spears:“I was so excited to see his show in London . We were going to be on tour in Europe at the same time and I was going to fly in to see him. He has been an inspiration throughout my entire life and I’m devas tated he’s gone!” !Quincy Jones:I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. He was the consum mate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.” !Justin Timberlake: “The world had lost a genius and a true ambas sador of not only pop music, but of all music. HEARD… they spend extravagantly and expect others to foot the bill. To them, the saying, ‘cut your coat accord ing to the cloth’, is all bunkum. With this arrogant attitude firmly embed ded in their heads (or minds), gentleman’s agreements are meant to be broken, and promises not kept. They do not realise they have the opportu nity to earn their liv ing (right now) because of others. This has been their failing over the years, especially where mone tary matters are con cerned.

Jackson had been rehearsing at the Staples Centre, home of the LA Lakers basketball team, where his frail health was all too apparent. On Wednesday, June 24 (09), Jackson turned up three hours late for rehearsals, and appeared listless and lethargic, accord ing to one observer. In the early hours of Thursday morning, he returned to his rented house, the former home of Sir Sean Connery in Holmby Hills, part of the “platinum triangle” of Los Angeles’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, together with Beverly Hills and Bel Air. One report suggested that Jackson had a daily injection of the drug Demerol, a com mercial name for pethidine, which can, in some cases, cause cardiac arrest. Reports that Jackson was addicted to Demerol, mor phine and up to five other prescription drugs including the antianxiety drug Xanax, had been circulating for several years. By late morning, Jackson’s personal physician was at the house, and Jackson allegedly received or gave himself an injec tion of Demerol. “Shortly after taking the Demerol, he started to experience slow shallow breath ing,” one source is quoted as saying. “His breathing gradually got slower and slower until it stopped.” At 12.21 pm, a 911 emergency call was made to the Los Angeles Fire Department, which includes the city’s paramedic service. A crew of four firefighters and two para medics was dispatched 42 seconds later, tak ing 3 mins 17secs to reach the property. The crew arrived to find Jackson in full cardiac arrest and his personal physician administering cardiopulmonary resuscita tion. Together they spent 42 minutes attempting to resuscitate Jackson at the house before taking him to the nearby Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre. The journey to the hospital took just over three minutes. Jackson arrived at UCLA at 1. 14 p.m. where relatives, including his sister La Toya (she performed in Sri Lanka in the 90s), waited as doctors spent more than an hour trying to revive the pop legend. “It was a very serious situation when we arrived,” said LAFD captain Steve Ruda. The hospital was “total bedlam”, according to one source, as members of the singer’s entourage who had arrived at the same time shouted: “You’ve got to save him! You’ve got to save him!” The medics were unable to restart Jackson’s heart and he was declared dead at 2.26 pm, on Thursday, June 26th (09). And so ends the Michael Jackson era.
