KNOW YOUR CAREER – “MBA”

Why should a person study Business Management?
Most students pursue an MBA for better placements and career opportunities. A Masters Degree in
Business Administration (MBA) helps you to garner the requisite employability standards, which in turn lead
to better job prospects & a higher pay. Some of the skills that should be possessed by all Business
professionals are:

• Communication Skills
• Goal setting Skills
• Decision Making Skills
• Self-Motivation, Self-Discipline and Time Management
• Teamwork, leadership and ability to motivate others
• Analytical skills
• Planning & Execution skills
• Creative thinking
• Cross-Cultural Exposure
• The ability to tackle difficult situations and to solve problems
• To be independent and manage one’s own time & work
• To think originally and creatively
• To argue one’s case with logic and not to be easily influenced by the views of others.

In the modern Business environment, standardization of processes and constant innovation are crucial
ingredients driving profit and growth. This quest for growth has spawned large-scale transnational
organizations which are complex and need people who can constantly monitor and mentor their progress.
The people manning some of the parts and the whole of these organizations need to be trained. This is
where the MBA degree fulfils its role, enabling students to learn this complex and competitive environment
and making them ready to lead and run these organizations.
Two year Full Time MBA: Final year students or Fresh Graduates can apply for this program.
However, it may be preferable for students with a reasonable amount of prior real-world work
experience and take classes during weekdays like other college students.
Part-time MBA programs normally hold classes on weekday evenings, after normal working hours, or
on weekends. Part-time programs normally last three years or more. The students in these programs
typically consist of working professionals, who take a light course load for a longer period of time until
the graduation requirements are met.
Distance learning MBA programs hold classes’ off-campus. These programs can be offered in a
number of different formats: correspondence courses by postal mail or email, non-interactive broadcast
video, pre-recorded video, live teleconference or videoconference, offline or online computer courses.
Many respectable schools offer these programs; however, so do many diploma mills. Potential students
should check the school's recognition before undertaking distance learning coursework.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Eligibility Criteria
A second-class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, with minimum 50% marks (45% for SC / ST candidates) in
any faculty is the usual requirement for applying to any management institute. Candidates appearing for
their degree exams in the current academic year are also eligible to appear for these entrance tests.

Eligibility criteria for Management Institutes
• A bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. [45% in case of the candidates
belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) or persons with Disability (PWD) category].
• A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of
three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.
• Candidates appearing for the final year bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination and
those who have completed degree requirement and are awaiting results can also apply.

Selection Process
Given the large number of applicants (1, 20,000 students took CET 2009), the institutes eliminate students
at each stage to arrive at the final list of candidates.

Stage 1 – The test
Most of the B-schools entrance tests are generally paper-based and are conducted between November and
January. Some of the important tests in the Indian calendar are CAT, NMAT, SNAP, CET etc. The CET is
conducted in the third week of February every year and the scores of the test are accepted by more than
139+ institutes across the Maharashtra State.
The various B-schools entrance tests primarily assess 3 basic areas: MATHS, LOGIC & ENGLISH. Some
tests also assess the candidate’s awareness of political, social & business issues.

Stage 2 – Group Discussion / Essay / Extempore and the Personal Interview
All students who appear for the test, (stage1) are sent a call letter / intimation for the Group Discussion and
Personal Interview. Usually, the call letters are issued after the results of the written test are declared. The
GD-PI round is conducted in late May or early June between February and March in most of the institutes.

The purpose of Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PD) is to get to know the student and gauge
how well he/she matches the profile desired by the institute.

Almost all management institutes require students to complete a pre-interview form, either at the time of
calling them for a group discussion and interview, or even earlier. It is important to fill out this form seriously,
since it provides the interview panel with cues for asking further questions. (Remember to retain a copy of
the form that you have submitted to the institute for future references)

Some institutes include writing an essay as part of the selection process. The essay is used as a tool to test
written communication, clarity of thought, structure of presentation, content and presentation style-all of
which are key managerial skills.

Stage 3 – The final call for Admission
After having cleared the above two stages, the candidate receives that all-important Final Call Letter of
Selection.
