We illustrate the feasibility of the idea on an example of simulated catalogues, describe the procedure, and characterize the results. We find the distribution of the length of the filaments, and suggest how to use this approach to obtain other statistical characteristics of filamentary networks. I.INTRODUCTIONThelarge-scalestructureoftheUniverseisstudiedbycreatinggalaxymaps–positionsofthousands(afewyearsago)andmillions(nowadays)ofgalaxiesinspace.Theangularpositionsofgalaxiesarerelativelyeasytomeasure,buttheirdistancescanbeestimatedonlybymeasuringtheirrecessionvelocities.Thelattertaskisdifficult,especiallyforfaintdistantobjects,andthusreallydetailedmapsofgalaxieshavestartedtoappearonlylately.Anadditionalcaveatisthattherecessionvelocitiescontainacontributionfromthedynamicalvelocityofagalaxy,sotheapparentdistancesofgalaxiesareinerror.Suchmapsarecalled’redshiftspace’maps,butthedistanceerrorsarenotasseriousastochangetheoverallpictureofthelarge-scalestructure.Anoverviewofsuchgalaxymapsisgivenin[1].Asanexample,wepresentheretwomaps.Thefirstmapcomesfromawell-knownrecentgalaxysurvey,theLasCampanasRedshiftSurvey(LCRS,[23]).Thissurveymeasuredtheredshifts(recessionvelocities)ofgalaxiesinsixslicesofwidthof80andofthicknessof1.5;atypicalnumberofgalaxiesinasliceisabout4000,andthedepthofthesurveyisabout575h1Mpc[31](correspondingtoaredshiftz=0.2forthestandardcosmologicalmodel).Amapofoneoftheslices(the42slice)isshowninFig.1,intheupperpanel.Theothermapweshowisfromthemostrecent,ongoingsurvey,theSloanDigitalSkySurvey(SDSS,[29]).ThissurveywillmeasurefaintergalaxiesthantheLCRS,willreachdeeperinspaceandwillfinallycoverafulladjointπsterradiansofthesky.Thedatathathavebeenreleasedbynowconsistalsoofseparateslices;wechoseacontiguoussliceof2.5thickand60wide(DataRelease1,theslicewiththemean’surveycoordinate’η≈−23).ThedepthoftheSDSSmaingalaxysampleisabout840h1Mpc(theredshiftz=0.3).Themapoftheselectedslice,containing10886galaxies,isshowninFig.1,inthelowerpanel.Thedominantfeatureofthesemaps,asofallothergalaxymapsofthelarge-scalestruc-tureoftheuniverse,isthenetworkoffilamentsofdifferentsizeandcontrast,alongwithrelativelyemptyvoidsbetweenthefilaments.Thefilamentarynetworkcontainsdifferentscales,wheresmaller-scalefilamentsarealsolessprominent.Thegradualdisappearanceofstructureswithincreasingdistanceisduetothefactthattheapparentluminosityofagalaxyisthefainterthemoredistantitis,andinmoredistantregionswecanobserveonlyafewofthebrightestgalaxies.2
