Introduction

Since 01 January 2007, the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (INA P-G), the Ecole Nationale
du Génie Rural, des Eaux et des Forêts (ENGREF) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries
Agricoles et Alimentaires (ENSIA) have merged to create a large establishment: the Institut des Sciences
et Industries du Vivant et de l’Environment under the name AgroParisTech.
1An establishment of higher education of the “EPCSP” type under the control of the Agricultural Ministry,
this new institute assures the training of more than 2000 students (Engineering, Master, Doctorate,
Post-Master courses) in the scientifc and industrial felds relating to living matter and the environment.
AgroParisTech is established in several French regions.
AgroParisTech is structured into 5 teaching and research departments composed of 230 teacher-resear-
chers (see below). These teachers carry out their research in 32 research units under the control of Agro-
ParisTech. 29 of these units are mixed research units (UMR, Unité Mixte de Recherche) grouping research
organisations (INRA, CNRS, CEMAGREF, etc.) and other establishments of higher education (Universities
and Engineering Schools). Most such units are located in the Ile de France region. The others are scattered
across the national territory: Montpelier (2), Nancy (2), Clermont-Ferrand (1), Kourou in Guyana (1).
Moreover, some teacher-researchers carry out research in Units not under AgroParisTech control but
which are better adapted to the perfecting of certain disciplinary skills.
The fve higher education and research departments of AgroParisTech and their associated
research units
• Department of the Sciences and Engineering of Agronomics, Forestry, Water and the Environment
(SIAFEE, Sciences et Ingénierie Agronomiques, Froestrières, de l’Eau et de l’Environnement)
This department contributes to addressing one of tomorrow’s principal challenges: reconciling
agricultural and forestry production with environmental management and protection in a context of
substantial constraints (climate change, scarcity of natural resources). It groups teams of which the teaching
and research activities contribute to the elaboration and implementation of new high performance and
sustainable modes of production in sectors of activity, to the management and valorisation of the
milieus and resources (water, soil, air, biodiversity), and to the promotion of multi-functional and integrated
development of the regions. It covers a wide range of disciplines: agronomy, forestry sciences, soil sciences,
bioclimatology, ecology and ecophysiology, water and waste sciences, systems of spatialized information.
The department is backed by 7 UMR.
• Department of Life Sciences and Health (SVS, Sciences de la Vie et Santé)
This department focuses on the biological bases of life and the biology of organisms including mankind
(healthy), domestic animal species, cultivated plant species and microorganisms. The department uses
different scale approaches, ranging from the level of molecular and cellular organisation to population
communities and ecosystems. Such approaches concern different branches of innovation and application in
the felds of animal and plant production, management of biodiversity and human health.
The department is backed by 11 UMR.
• Department of Food and Bio-product Sciences and Processes (SPAB, Sciences et Procédés
des Aliments et Bio-produits)
This department groups teams of which the teaching and research activities are centred around industrial AgroParisTech Research Report for the period 2005-2008 3
transformation of food products and bio-products and, in general, the mastery of industrial product quality
in all of its dimensions. Such work covers a large panel of disciplines: chemistry, biochemistry; physico-che-
mistry; microbiology (process hygienics and industrial microbiology); process engineering, process model-
ling and control; sensorial analysis and consumer approaches. This department is backed by 4 UMR.
• Department of Economic, Social and Management Sciences (SESG, Sciences Economiques, Sociales
et de Gestion)
This department groups disciplinary competence in economics, management, sociology, law, political
science and geography. These disciplines make it possible to integrate human organizations, socio-econo-
mic processes and implemented policies to better understand the functional and management processes
of social subjects covered in the AgroParisTech felds of intervention.
• Department of Mathematic, Informatic and Physical Modelling (MMIP, Modélisation Mathématique,
Informatique et Physique)
This department groups disciplinary competence in modelling complex systems: mathematics, informatics
and physics. Such felds of competence are not limited to any specifc sector of application. Indeed, these
disciplines supply a large number of methods making it possible to study different aspects of complexity
(interactions, couplings, large numbers of variables and data). The department’s work involves developing
approaches for representing and integrating heterogenic knowledge along with approaches in determinist
and stochastic modelling. The department is backed by 2 UMR.
This remarkable scientifc environment makes it possible to considerably multiply the “research” potential
surrounding AgroParisTech through the UMR. The research laboratories are located for - in the Ile-de-
France (Paris, Grignon and Massy sites) and for - in other regions (Montpellier, Nancy, Clermont-Ferrand,
Kourou).
This environment is all the more interesting as it lies at the heart of two major alliance procedures invol-
ving the establishment:
2• an alliance with partners in research and higher education in the Ile de France (GIS STVE ) working
in the felds of agriculture, food, the environment and health,
• an alliance with ten other ParisTech Engineering Schools in the felds of science and technology.
The present report defnes the quantitative and qualitative features of AgroParisTech research output
in several felds:
• human potential and fnancial resources,
• output designated for the academic world,or the socio-economic world or in support of public action,
• training through and for research.
In general, these elements concern the 2005-2008 period. They take the overall potential and output of
the “research” units with which AgroParisTech is associated into account while describing the contribution
of each specifc establishment within the group.
1. Etablissement Public a Caractère Scientifque, Culturel et Professionnel (Public Establishment of a Scientifc, Cultural and Professional Character)
2. GIS STVE (Sciences et Technologies du Vivant et de l’Environnement groups Ile de France research teams from three extablishments carrying out applied research
(INRA: Versailles-Grignon, Paris and Massy; CEMAGREF: Antony; AFSSA: Parisian region; three Engineering Schools in higher education and agronomy: AgroParisTech
Ile de France, ENVA, ENSP). AgroParisTech Research Report for the period 2005-20084
