Transcript Sky News presenter, Martin Stanford:Police are being urged to clear an anti-capitalist camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral, after thermal imaging pictures appeared to show it largely empty overnight. Protestors set up a camp eleven days ago forcing the cathedral to close to visitors for the first time since the Blitz. Harriet Prest reports.
Sky News reporter, Harriet Prest:The occupied London camp now sprawls around the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral. Some 200 tents mark the occupation. They vowed to stay here whatever the weather. But now these thermal images filmed just after midnight this morning appear to show many of the tents empty. And now Sky News has learned, the city of London police have used the same technology to show only 10 per cent are occupied at night.
Chancellor Alex Deane, of the City of London corporation: Idon’t really care if they’re full or not. I mean they’re an eye-sore either way. I mean London is sick and tired of this mess on the doorstep of one of our great national monuments. On the other hand, I suppose I’m quite glad ... that it’s gonna be easier to evict these people if ultimately that’s what has to happen, if they’re not even here in the first place.
Sky News reporter, Harriet Prest:Since the camp arrived here over a week ago, it’s grown in size with new tents springing up all the time. But with some of them apparently empty, some have accused this camp of being a part-time protest. Every lunchtime, the protestors meet to discuss the issues of the day. They firmly disagree with the evidence and say they can explain why some of the tents might be unoccupied.
First interviewed protestor: Peoplecan be sort of sat around sort of outside their tents, just having a chat... and that doesn’t actually come up on the the media, the thermal imaging and so therefore you get a false picture on what’s actually in reality an active camp.
Second interviewed protestor:We can’t all be here all the time. When we go away for any reason we leave our tent and somebody else takes it over.
Third interviewed person:The idea that you know people aren’t being...you know, that they aren’t staying in their tents, it it seems... to me it just seems irrelevant.
Sky News reporter Harriet Prest:Since St Paul’s closed its doors to tourists at the weekend, the pressure on the church, the police and the City of London to act has been gaining momentum. In the meantime, the protestors say the empty tents are irrelevant and that they’ll stay until their message about corporate greed is heard.
Harriet Prest, Sky News, the City.
