Distinguish Yourself
Gaining international experience is an investment for
your future career and graduate study. Seventy-five
percent of recently polled employers indicated that
internships matter. Distinguish yourself even more by
going international.
Solidify Your Language
Although you may not need to know a second
language to do your international internship,
exposure to foreign languages is a great benefit.
In many careers, the pay is higher if you know a
language other than English, and in many careers,
knowing more than one language is required. If
you do know a foreign language, completing an
internship in a place where that language is spoken
may help you practice business language you might
not have used before.
Experience Culture
Today’s professional world is smaller and more
globalized than ever before—it is necessary that you
have an understanding of different cultures in order
to work with them and in them.
It’s Affordable
Some internships pay, and some provide housing;
some students receive financial assistance from ISP.
Don’t forget that your BYU scholarships and federal
financial aid apply to cover expenses.
Bragging Rights
Make sure you mention your international
internship on your resume, on applications, and
in your interviews. Your unique experience will be
remembered by potential employers.
Earn BYU Credit
An academic internship helps
fulfill BYU requirements by
offering credit toward your
major or minor.
Individual
Internships
If you don’t find the internship you are looking for
through ISP, let us help you create your own individual
internship for BYU credit. You select the location, the
type of work you would like to do, and the semester
that best works for you. Maybe you already have an
internship set up and you need to find out how to
earn BYU credit, or perhaps you are searching for an
internship overseas—whatever advice you need, let ISP
help you get started.
Application deadlines for individual internships

• Winter Semester: 1 November
• Spring and Summer Terms: 1 March
How to Set Up
an Individual
Internship
1. Find an individual internship.
Finding an internship is your responsibility, but ISP
may have networking ideas to help you get started.
2. Develop your Internship Proposal for ISP.
After finding your internship, complete an Individual
Internship Proposal for ISP review. The proposal
form may be found on the ISP web site and at the
office. Proposals should be turned in to Aaron Rose,
international internships coordinator.
3. Apply for an individual internship.
Once your internship proposal has been approved,
complete an online application on the ISP web site.
4. Prepare for cultural challenge.
ISP’s pre-departure seminar covers topics such as
cross-cultural communication, travel safety and
international security, and professional protocols in
an international setting. All students who wish to
represent BYU while abroad on an internship must
complete this seminar. Check with ISP staff for a
seminar schedule.
5. ISP will register you for BYU credit.
Through the Course Contract method, ISP will
register you for BYU credit you will be taking while
abroad. ISP will explain course contract forms,
working with faculty, and offer advice on course
selection. ISP creates the international section of your
courses and will register you for them.
