The purpose of this guide is to illustrate some strategies for setting up courses and assignments in ways that enable you to track and communicate achievement on course standards using the EdBox Gradebook. This guide assumes the user has knowled e of the basic functionality of EdBox Gradebook. For a refresher on the basics see theUser Manualfor Teachers

Strategies:SettingUpClassOptionsFor ProficiencyBasedGradeBooks BeforeusingyourGradebook,youmustsetupClassOptions.Usingthefollowing steps,youcansetupcategoryweightsandgradescalesforclassesthatwillmore closelyreflectaproficiencybasedsystemofgrading. CategoriesTab Onegoalofproficiencybasedsystemsistoseparatemeasurementofacademic achievementfrommeasurementsofbehaviorsuchasattendance,completionof home/classwork,etc.Weknowthesebehaviorsusuallycorrelatewithachievement, buttheyarenotthesamethingandshouldbemeasuredseparately.

Categoryweightscanbeusedtofocusgradecalculationsonassessedacademic performance. Note:Evenifcategoryweightsaresettozero,itisimportantthatcategoriesareused, otherwisegrad eightedcategories. Intheexampleabove,only“Tests/Quizzes”and“UnitEssays”arebeingusedas assessmentsforthisclass.Assignmentsinthe“InteractiveNotebook”categoryare homeworkandclasswork,whichinthissystemareconsideredpracticeandtherefore notcalculatedintothegrade.Someteacherschoosetoassignasmallpercentage(10% maybe)to“Practice”categoriesforthemotivationfactor.Weknowstudentswantto know“Howmuchisthisworth?”butagoalofproficiencybasedgradingpracticesis tomeasureastudent’sabilitytoshowtheyareproficientinthecoursestandards. Eventuallywewouldlikeourstudentstobemotivatedtodogreatworkandtorealize practiceisnecessarytoaccomplishthis.

ScalesTab Teacherscanviewtheparametersofthescalesprovided.Scalescannotbeedited.The scalesforboththe4pt.and6pt.RubricscalesweredevelopedbyagroupofPPS teachersusingcurrentresearchandtheirpersonalclassroomexperience.Applicationof a“RubricFinal”scalerendersalettergradethatmorecloselyapproximatesproficiency basedgradingpracticesandcanbeusedwheretheA‐Fscaleisrequired. MakesuretochoosetheGradingScalethatmatchesthe“Final”rubric scaleyouselectedforyourclassinthe<Terms>tab.Choosingthe “Assignment”rubricwillenableyou,andstudents,toseewherethey standbasedontherubricdescriptors. 2. Weightscanbeusedtoshowthatanassignment/assessmentismore involvedand/orgivesstudentstheopportunitytoshowtheirproficiency inamorerobustfashion.

Note:Whenusingtherubricscale,theoverallassignmentscoreisthe averageofthescoresoneachStandardattachedtothatassignment.(We areworkingtowardshavingothercalculationsavailableincludingMode andthe“PowerLaw”whichtakesintoconsiderationmostrecenteffort.) Hoveryourmouseoverthe“A”(AveragingCalculation)or“L” (LearningTrend)intheupperrightcornerofthecelltoseethegraph. Thisgraphcanprovideinformationforapplyingprofessionaljudgment whengrading. Note:Oncetherehavebeen4attemptsonastandard,aLearningTrend graphisavailabletoview.Ifthereare3orlessattemptsonastandard, onlyanAveragewillbeavailable.

StandardsReports StandardsReportsaretiedtoassessmentsofthestandardslinkedwithin assignments.Thesestandardsarescoredseparatelywithinanassignmentand pulledtoshowonthesereports.Thesearevaluablereportsforimplementing proficiencybasedgrading.Withthesereports,ateachercanreviewindividual studentprogress,groupprogresssuchasaclass,andbuildingcoverageof standards. In the Student Explorer a report can be run that includes scores onall standardsin 1. all classes. This report includes each attempt at a standard (by assignment) and the average, or overall score. Only the standards that have been scored will appear in this report. This is the same report that is available to parents in the EdBox Viewer Just click on the “Student Standards Report” and the report will appear.

TheStudentStandardsReport–GBreportprovidesasummaryforeach studentinaclassontheirproficiencylevelsoncoursestandardsandthe assignmentsthathavestandardsattachedtothem.Teacherscanrunthis report,anditisavailableonthestudentexplorerandtheparent/student viewoftheEdBoxViewer. TheObjectivesGrid–Quarterreportprovidesagradebooklikeviewofall thestudentsinaclassandtheirproficiencyinthecoursestandards.Thisisa greatvisualthatcandiagnosewhichstandardsneedmoreworkandwhich studentsneedmoreemphasisonwhichstandards.
