The present volume is part of a series of sectoral studies on the
evolution of concentration in the member states of the European
Community.
Those reports were compiled by the different national Institutes and
expertsι engaged by the Commission to effect the study programme in
question.
Regarding the specific and general interest of these reports and the
responsibility taken by the Commission with regard to the European
Parliament, they are published wholly in the original version.
The Commission refrains from commenting, only stating that the
responsibility for the data and opinions appearing in the reports,
rests solely with the Institute or the expert who is the author.
Other reports on the sectoral programme will be published by the
Commission as soon as they are received.
The Commission will also publish a series of documents and tables of
syntheses, allowing for international comparisons on the evolution of
concentration in the different member states of the Community. CONTENTS

The present volume aims to illustrate, by concrete examples/as well as to improve and
complete the research methodology on industrial sectoral and market structures, published
by the Commission in 1976.
The present volume (A 44), written by Dr. Remo LINDA, outlines the methodological
framework of the research in relation to the European industrial structure, by illustrating
more particularly the quantitative comparative methods as the basic platform for developing
studies in sectoral, market and enterprises structure. An overall picture of the European
manufacturing industry is also concisely outlined, while the concentration in sub-markets
of the food and drink industry in some European countries, is underlined.
The second volume, written by Prof. Christian MARFELS, suggests some important innovations
to quantitative approaches, illustrating those methods by an application to the sturiy of
the beverages industry and to salient product markets in Germany.
The title of the present volume is "General Theory and Empirical Research Applied to the
European Industry - The Beverages Case".
It contains two chapters :
Chapter one : Structure of the European Industry - a global statistical approach (1975).
Chapter two : Quantitative Analysis of Oligopoly - including two sections :
Section one : The underlying philosophy of the Linda index system ;
Section two : Construction of a number of operational models to illustrate
relationships between size and structure.
Some Appendices containing practical applications of methodology complete the present volume.
The title of the second volume (B 44) - report Prof. MARFELS - is :
"The Evolution of Concentration in the Beverages Industry in the Federal Republic of Germany",
This part of the study takes into consideration separately : the beer industry, the spirit
distilling industry with some relevant sub-markets (Korn, Brandy, Liqueurs, Rum), the soft
drinks industry, with some significants (lemonades, colas, mineral water and
juices), the sparkling wines industry ("Sekt").
The present study consists of two volumes tied by the common goal to achieve international
comparisons of industrial structures within the European Community*(volumes A 44 and Β 44
of "Evolution of concentration and competition series").
