GENERAL PREFACE.This series of monographs has been planned to supplyvisitors to the great English Cathedrals with accurateand well illustrated guide books at a popular price. Theaim of each writer has been to produce a workcompiled with sufficient knowledge and scholarship tobe of value to the student of archæology and history, and yet not too technical in language for the use of anordinary visitor or tourist. To specify all the authorities which have been madeuse of in each case would be difficult and tedious inthis place. But amongst the general sources ofinformation which have been almost invariably founduseful are:—firstly, the great county histories, thevalue of which, especially in questions of genealogyand local records, is generally recognized; secondly, the numerous papers by experts which appear fromtime to time in the transactions of the antiquarian andarchæological societies; thirdly, the importantdocuments made accessible in the series issued bythe Master of the Rolls; fourthly, the well-known worksof Britton and Willis on the English Cathedrals; and,
lastly, the very excellent series of Handbooks to theCathedrals, originated by the late Mr. John Murray, towhich the reader may in most cases be referred forfuller detail, especially in reference to the histories ofthe respective sees.Gleeson White.Edward F. Strange.Editors of the Series.AUTHOR'S PREFACE.The authorities consulted in the preparation of thisbook are too numerous to quote in detail. But theadmirable works by the late Rev. W.H. Jones havebeen proved so full of useful information that theservice they rendered must be duly acknowledged, although in almost every instance further referencewas made to the building itself—or to officiallyauthenticated documents. Nor must the help of one ofthe cathedral cicerones be overlooked, in spite of hisdesire to remain anonymous; for his knowledge of thebuilding served to correct several mistakes in the firstedition. One moot point concerning the bishop
commemorated by an effigy in the North Choir Aisle isleft an open question. Local authorities insist that itshould be attributed to Bishop Poore, antiquarians ofdistinction affirm that it represents Bishop Bingham. The illustrations, with the exception of a few detailsfrom Britton and Carter, are from photographs mostcourteously placed at my disposal by Mrs. H.Snowden Ward, or from the series published byMessrs. S.B. Bolas and Co., Carl Norman and Co.(now The Photochrom Company, Ltd.), Poulton andSons (of Lee) and Witcomb and Son, of Salisbury, ineach case duly acknowledged below the engraving.G.W.CONTENTS. History of the CathedralDescription of the ExteriorTower and SpireWest FrontNorth PorchPAGE116182532
