¡Maldecido animal!… ¡Tiene todos los demonios en el cuerpo!… ¡Un rayo me parta y me confunda! UNA VOZ ¡No maldigas, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Tu alma es negra como un tizón del Infierno, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Piensa en la hora de la muerte, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Siete diablos hierven aceite en una gran caldera para achicharrar tu cuerpo mortal, pecador! EL CABALLERO ¿Quién me habla? ¿Sois voces del otro mundo? ¿Sois almas en pena, o sois hijos de puta? Retiembla un gran trueno en el aire, y el potro se encabrita, con amenaza de desarzonar al jinete. La blanca procesión pasa como una niebla sobre los maizales . UNA VOZ ¡Sigue con nosotros, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Toma un cirio encendido, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Alumbra el camino del camposanto, pecador! El caballero siente el escalofrío de la muerte, viendo en su mano oscilar la llama de un cirio. La procesión de las ánimas le rodea, y un aire frío, aliento de sepultura, le arrastra en el giro de los blancos fantasmas que marchan al son de cadenas y salmodian en latín . UNA VOZ ¡Reza con los muertos por los que van a morir! ¡Reza, pecador! OTRA VOZ ¡Sigue con las ánimas hasta que cante el gallo negro! OTRA VOZ ¡Eres nuestro hermano, y todos somos hijos de Satanás! OTRA VOZ ¡El pecado es sangre, y hace hermanos a los hombres como la sangre de los padres! OTRA VOZ ¡A todos nos dió la leche de sus tetas peludas, la Madre Diablesa!
