BeforeonecancorrectlyunderstandtheworkoftheHolySpirit,
hemustfirstofallknowtheSpiritHimself.Afrequentsource
oferrorandfanaticismabouttheworkoftheHolySpiritisthe
attempttostudyandunderstandHisworkwithoutfirstofall
comingtoknowHimasaPerson.
Itisofthehighestimportancefromthestandpointofworship
thatwedecidewhethertheHolySpiritisaDivinePerson,
worthytoreceiveouradoration,ourfaith,ourlove,andour
entiresurrendertoHimself,orwhetheritissimplyaninfluence
emanatingfromGodorapoweroranilluminationthatGod
impartstous.IftheHolySpiritisaperson,andaDivinePerson,
andwedonotknowHimassuch,thenwearerobbingaDivine
Beingoftheworshipandthefaithandtheloveandthesurrender
toHimselfwhichareHisdue.
Itisalsoofthehighestimportancefromthepracticalstandpoint
thatwedecidewhethertheHolySpiritismerelysomemysterious
andwonderfulpowerthatweinourweaknessandignoranceare
somehowtogetholdofanduse,orwhethertheHolySpiritisa
realPerson,infinitelyholy,infinitelywise,infinitelymightyand
infinitelytenderwhoistogetholdofanduseus.Theformer
conceptionisutterlyheathenish,notessentiallydifferentfrom
thethoughtoftheAfricanfetichworshipperwhohashisgod
whomheuses.ThelatterconceptionissublimeandChristian.If
wethinkoftheHolySpiritassomanydoasmerelyapoweror
influence,ourconstantthoughtwillbe,HowcanIgetmoreof
theHolySpirit,butifwethinkofHimintheBiblicalwayas
aDivinePerson,ourthoughtwillratherbe,HowcantheHoly
ChapterI.ThePersonalityoftheHolySpirit.

Spirithavemoreofme?TheconceptionoftheHolySpiritas
aDivineinfluenceorpowerthatwearesomehowtogetholdof
anduse,leadstoself-exaltationandself-sufficiency.Onewho
sothinksoftheHolySpiritandwhoatthesametimeimagines
thathehasreceivedtheHolySpiritwillalmostinevitablybe
fullofspiritualprideandstrutaboutasifhebelongedtosome
superiororderofChristians.Onefrequentlyhearssuchpersons
say,IamaHolyGhostman,orIamaHolyGhostwoman.
ButifweoncegraspthethoughtthattheHolySpiritisaDivine
Personofinfinitemajesty,gloryandholinessandpower,who
inmarvellouscondescensionhascomeintoourheartstomake
Hisabodethereandtakepossessionofourlivesandmakeuse
ofthem,itwillputusinthedustandkeepusinthedust.Ican
thinkofnothoughtmorehumblingormoreoverwhelmingthan
thethoughtthatapersonofDivinemajestyandglorydwellsin

myheartandisreadytouseevenme.
Itisofthehighestimportancefromthestandpointof
experiencethatweknowtheHolySpiritasaperson.Thousands
andtensofthousandsofmenandwomencantestifytothe
blessingthathascomeintotheirownlivesastheyhavecome
toknowtheHolySpirit,notmerelyasagraciousinfluence
(emanating,itistrue,fromGod)butasarealPerson,justas
realasJesusChristHimself,anever-present,lovingFriendand
mightyHelper,whoisnotonlyalwaysbytheirsidebutdwellsin
theirhearteverydayandeveryhourandwhoisreadytoundertake
forthemineveryemergencyoflife.Thousandsofministers,
ChristianworkersandChristiansinthehumblestspheresof
lifehavespokentome,orwrittentome,ofthecomplete
transformationoftheirChristianexperiencethatcametothem
whentheygraspedthethought(notmerelyinatheological,but
inanexperimentalway)thattheHolySpiritwasaPersonand
consequentlycametoknowHim.
ThereareatleastfourdistinctlinesofproofintheBiblethat
theHolySpiritisaperson.

Allthedistinctivecharacteristicsofpersonalityareascribed
totheHolySpiritintheBible.
Whatarethedistinctivecharacteristics,ormarks,of
personality?Knowledge,feelingoremotion,andwill.Any
entitythatthinksandfeelsandwillsisaperson.Whenwesay
thattheHolySpiritisaperson,therearethosewhounderstand
ustomeanthattheHolySpirithashandsandfeetandeyesand
earsandmouth,andsoon,butthesearenotthecharacteristics
ofpersonalitybutofcorporeity.Allofthesecharacteristicsor
marksofpersonalityarerepeatedlyascribedtotheHolySpirit
intheOldandNewTestaments.Wereadin1Cor.ii.10,11,
ButGodhathrevealedthemuntousbyHisSpirit:fortheSpirit
searchethallthings,yea,thedeepthingsofGod.Forwhatman
knoweththethingsofaman,savethespiritofmanwhichisin
him?evensothethingsofGodknowethnoman,buttheSpirit
ofGod.HereknowledgeisascribedtotheHolySpirit.Weare
clearlytaughtthattheHolySpiritisnotmerelyaninfluencethat
illuminatesourmindstocomprehendthetruthbutaBeingwho
Himselfknowsthetruth.
In1Cor.xii.11,weread,Butalltheseworkeththatoneand
theselfsameSpirit,dividingtoeverymanseverallyas
Hewill
.
HerewillisascribedtotheSpiritandwearetaughtthattheHoly
Spiritisnotapowerthatwegetholdofanduseaccordingtoour
willbutaPersonofsovereignmajesty,whousesusaccording
toHiswill.Thisdistinctionisoffundamentalimportancein
ourgettingintorightrelationswiththeHolySpirit.Itisatthis
verypointthatmanyhonestseekersafterpowerandefficiency
inservicegoastray.Theyarereachingoutafterandstrugglingto
getpossessionofsomemysteriousandmightypowerthatthey
canmakeuseofintheirworkaccordingtotheirownwill.They
willnevergetpossessionofthepowertheyseekuntiltheycome
torecognizethatthereisnotsomeDivinepowerforthemtoget
holdofanduseintheirblindnessandignorancebutthatthere
isaPerson,infinitelywise,aswellasinfinitelymighty,whois

willingtotakepossessionofthemandusethemaccordingtoHis
ownperfectwill.Whenwestoptothinkofit,wemustrejoice
thatthereisnoDivinepowerthatbeingssoignorantasweare,
soliabletoerr,togetholdofanduse.Howappallingmightbe
theresultsiftherewere.Butwhataholyjoymustcomeintoour
heartswhenwegraspthethoughtthatthereisaDivinePerson,
Onewhonevererrs,whoiswillingtotakepossessionofusand
imparttoussuchgiftsasHeseesbestandtouseusaccordingto
Hiswiseandlovingwill.
WereadinRom.viii.27,AndHethatsearcheththehearts
knowethwhatis
themindoftheSpirit
,becauseHemaketh
intercessionforthesaintsaccordingtothewillofGod.Inthis
passagemindisascribedtotheHolySpirit.TheGreekword
translatedmindisacomprehensiveword,includingtheideas
ofthought,feelingandpurpose.Itisthesamethatisusedin
Rom.viii.7wherewereadthatthecarnalmindisenmity
againstGod:foritisnotsubjecttothelawofGod,neitherindeed
canbe.Sotheninthispassagewehaveallthedistinctivemarks
ofpersonalityascribedtotheHolySpirit.
WefindthepersonalityoftheHolySpiritbroughtoutina
mosttouchingandsuggestivewayinRom.xv.30,NowI
beseechyou,brethren,fortheLordJesusChrist'ssake,andfor
the
loveoftheSpirit
,thatyestrivetogetherwithmeinyour
prayerstoGodforme.Herewehave
love
ascribedtothe
HolySpirit.Thereaderwoulddowelltostopandponderthose
fivewords,
theloveoftheSpirit
.Wedwelloftenuponthe
loveofGodtheFather.Itisthesubjectofourdailyandconstant
thought.WedwelloftenupontheloveofJesusChristtheSon.
WhowouldthinkofcallinghimselfaChristianwhopasseda
daywithoutmeditatingontheloveofhisSaviour,buthowoften
havewemeditatedupon
theloveoftheSpirit
