AndIsawagreatwhitethrone,andhimthat
satonit,fromwhosefacetheearthandheavenfledaway.

Thesecurityofallfleshiswonderousgreat,forthereisafearful
sleepfallenbothuponthegoodandtheevil.Thefoolishvirgins
aresoundasleep,andthewiseareasleepalso.Andsupposethe
Lordbeatthedoor,andthehourofjudgmentathand,andthe
seventhangelreadytoblowthelasttrumpet,whentimeshall
benomore;yetitisscarcelyoneofathousand,yea,oneoften
thousand,istobefoundthatisprepared,andbusyingthemselves
tomeettheLord,whoismakingspeedtocomeintheclouds:
andhowsoonthatfireshallbreakforth,whichshallkindlethe
heavensaboveyourhead,andtheearthunderyourfeet,andshall
setallonfire;howsoonthetrumpetshallblow,andtheshout
shallcry,Rise,Dead,andcometojudgment,isonlyknown
toGod,andtonomortalman.Willyenotthenbewakened
tillthistrumpetwakenyou?Andwillnoneofyoutakepains
tolookovertheleavesofyourconscience,andreadwhatsins
arewrittenthere,sinceyecameintotheworld,beforethatday
ofdoomcomeuponyou?Othatyeknewthateternity,andthat
terrorofthedayoftheLord,whentheheavensaboveyou,and
theearthbeneathyou,shallnotbeabletostandbeforetheface
ofhimthatsitsonthethrone!ThereforeIhopetheLordhas

madechoicetomeofthistext,atthistime,togiveyouwarning
beforethejudgmentcome.YeknowthewatchmanthattheLord
takesfromamongthepeople,thathesetsoverthecityorhouse
tocredittothem,Ifyeseetheswordandpestilencecoming,and
warnthemnot,thebloodofthemthatperishunderthejudgment
forlackofwarning,willberequiredathishand,thatis,the
watchman's;thereforeitistimeformetobemakingwarning
toyou,and,inthemeasureofstrengththatGodwillgiveme,
Iamtomakewarningnotofatemporaljudgment,butofan
everlastingjudgmentthatiscomingon,(Godwakenyouand
warnyouintime!)thatwhenyeshallseetheJudgesitonhis
throne,yourheartsmaynottrembleathisawfulcountenance,
havinggottenyoursoulswashedinhisblood.But,tocome
tothepurpose,therearemanyvisionsinthisbook,andthere
aremanythingsdonehere,thattheSonshewstohisservant
John.HeshewshimfirstthepresentstateoftheChurchatthat
timeintheworld,underthenameofsevenstars,andhetells,
theyaresuffering,andhadpatience;andtheylabouredforhis
name'ssake,andfaintednot;butyethehadsomewhatagainst
them,becausetheyhadforsakentheirfirstlove.Somewere
intribulationandpoverty,butyetrichinGod;somekeptthe
nameofJesus,anddeniednotthefaith,supposetheyshouldhad
giventheirbloodforit,asthefaithfulmartyrAntipasdid;but
yethehadafewthingsagainstthem,becausetheymaintained
thedoctrineoftheNicolaitans,whichthinghehated.Somehad
love,service,faith,andpatience,andtheirworkwasmoreatthe
lastthanatthefirst;butyettheysufferedthefalseprophetess
Jezebeltobeamongthem,towhomhethreatenshewillcasther
intoabedofaffliction,andthemthatcommitfornicationwith
her,excepttheyrepentthemoftheirworks.Thereweresome
whoseworkswerenotfoundperfectbeforeGod;thereforehe
exhortsthemtorememberhowtheyhadheard,andreceived;
hebidsthemholdfastandrepent,otherwise,hetells,thathe
willcomeshortlyagainstthem.Somehadalittlestrength,and

kepthisword,anddeniednothisname;thereforehepromises
todelivertheminthehouroftemptationthatshallcomeupon
alltheworldtotrythewholeearth.Somewereneithercoldnor
hot;andtherefore,becausetheywerelukewarm,hetellsthem
thatitwouldcometopass,thathewouldspewthemoutofhis
mouth;theythoughttheywererichandincreasedingoods,and
hadneedofnothing,buttheyknownotthattheywerewretched,
miserable,poor,blind,andnaked;andthenhecounselsthemto
buyofhimgoldtriedinthefire,thattheymightberich,and
whiteraiment,thattheymightbeclothed,andeye-salvethatthey
mightsee.Sowhatisyourcasethisday?Haveyenotforsaken
yourfirstlove?Butasfortribulation,itisnotyetcome;forour
dayshavebeendaysofpeace,oflight,liberty,andglory;butas
fortribulationitisnotyetcome;butastheLordlives,thedaysof
tribulationarenotfaroff.Asforfalsedoctrine,Godbepraised,
itisnotamongusyet,or,atleast,ifitbe,itdarenotbeavowed
yet;butIfear,that,wholivestoseeit,theyshallseeheresy
andcorruptionindoctrineandreligioncreepinpieceandpiece,
inthisChurch;andifourworksbefoundperfectbeforeGod,or
not,theLordknowsthecontrary,andyourownconsciencesbear
witnesstoit;andifyourlifebeanswerabletoyourname,Ileave
ittoyourconsciencestojudge,ifwehavenotanamethatwe
areliving,andyetaredead;andwhetherthisbenotthedoleful
stateofthegenerationthatisneithercoldnorhot.Itisclear,the
zealofthegloryofGod,beingsowornoutoftheheartsofall,
plainlydeclaresthesame.ButIleavethis.Afterhehadshewed
himthepresentstateoftheChurch,atthattime,thenhetellshim
whatshallbethestateoftheChurchuntotheendoftheworld.
And
first
,inthevisionofasealedbook,containingtheseacts
concerningtheChurch,whichnonecouldopenbuttheLionof
thetribeofJudah,foritwassealedwithsevenseals.Now,what
wascontainedinthesesevenseals?Thiswilltakealargertime
todeclarethannowismeettowareuponit.

consolationstotheChurchofGod;howsoeveritbethatshe
beintribulation,orpoverty,andaffliction;andalbeititcome
topass,thatthedevilcastsomeoftheminprison,thatthey
maybetried,andsomehavetribulationtendays,whichisbut
ashorttime;andhowsoeveritbethatouradversarygoesabout
continuallylikearoaringlion,seekingwhomtodevour;but
yet,hethatridesonthewhitehorse,withthebadgeathisbelt,
andthearrowsathisside,heshallgetthevictoryattheendof
theworld;andtothemthatarefaithfultothedeath,heshallgive
themacrownoflife.

thesetemporaljudgments,becommontothegodlyaswellasto
thewicked,yetthereisconsolationtothesoulsofthemthatare
slainforthetestimonyofJesus,theyarelyingunderthealtar,
andtheycrywithaloudvoice,Lord,howlong,holyandtrue,
dostthounotjudgeandavengeourblooduponthemthatdwell
ontheearth?Thenitwassaiduntothem,thattheyshouldrest
foralittleseason,untiltheirfellow-servantsandbrethren,that
shouldbekilled,astheywere,shouldbefulfilled.

earthquake,andthesunwasasblackassackclothofhair,and
themoonwaslikeblood,andthestarsofheavenfelltothe

places;andthenthekingsoftheearth,andthegreatmen,and
richmen,andthecaptains,andthemightymen,andeverybond
man,andeveryfreeman,hidthemselvesindensandrocksof
themountains;andsaidtothemountainsandrocks,Fallon
us,andhideusfromthepresenceofhimthatsitsonthethrone,
andfromthefaceoftheLamb:forthegreatdayofhiswrathis
come,andwhoshallbeabletostand?ThenshalltheChurch
ofGodbeavengedonherenemies;thensheshallhavepower
overthenations,andshallrulethemwitharodofiron,andas
thevesselsofapottertheyshallbebroken;thenshallthesaints

ofGodbebroughtoutofgreattribulation,andhavetheirlong
robeswashedandmadewhiteinthebloodoftheLamb;they
shallbeinthepresenceofthethroneofGod,andservehim
bothdayandnightinhistemple;andhethatsitsonthethrone
shallliveamongthem,andhethatisinthemidstofthethrone
shallgovernthem,andshallleadthemtothelivelyfountainsof
waters,andGodshallwipeawayalltearsfromtheireyes.Now,
Igoforward.Afterthis,hetellshim,beforethisdaytheGospel
shallbewonderfullyrestrained;Andthebottomlesspitshallbe
opened,andthesmokeofthatpitshallariseasthesmokeofa
greatfurnace;andthesunandtheairshallbemadedarkwiththat
smoke:andoutofthatsmokeshallcomelocustsupontheearth,
andtheyshallhavepowerasthescorpionsoftheearthhave,
andthepainofthemshallbeasthepainofascorpion
