May grace, mercy andpeace be granted to you from God the Fatherand Christ Jesus our Lord. 001:003 When I wason my journey to Macedonia I begged you toremain on in Ephesus that you mightremonstrate with certain persons because oftheir erroneous teaching 001:004 and theattention they bestow on mere fables andendless pedigrees, such as lead to controversyrather than to a true stewardship for God,which only exists where there is faith. And Imake the same request now. 001:005 But the
end sought to be secured by exhortation is thelove which springs from a pure heart, a clearconscience and a sincere faith. 001:006 Fromthese some have drifted away, and havewandered into empty words. 001:007 They areambitious to be teachers of the Law, althoughthey do not understand either their own wordsor what the things are about which they makesuch confident assertions. 001:008 Now weknow that the Law is good, if a man uses it inthe way it should be used, 001:009 andremembers that a law is not enacted to controla righteous man, but for the lawless andrebellious, the irreligious and sinful, thegodless and profane—for those who striketheir fathers or their mothers, for murderers,001:010 fornicators, sodomites, slave-dealers,liars and false witnesses; and for whatever elseis opposed to wholesome teaching 001:011 andis not in accordance with the Good News of theblessed God with which I have been entrusted.001:012 I am thankful to Him who made mestrong—even Christ Jesus our Lord—becauseHe has judged me to be faithful and has put meinto His service, 001:013 though I waspreviously a blasphemer and a persecutor andhad been insolent in outrage. Yet mercy wasshown me, because I had acted ignorantly, nothaving as yet believed; 001:014 and the graceof our Lord came to me in overflowing fulness, conferring faith on me and the love which is inChrist Jesus. 001:015 Faithful is the saying, and deserving of universal acceptance, thatChrist Jesus came into the world to save
sinners; among whom I stand foremost.001:016 But mercy was shown me in order thatin me as the foremost of sinners Christ Jesusmight display the fulness of His long-sufferingpatience as an example to encourage thosewho would afterwards be resting their faith onHim with a view to the Life of the Ages. 001:017Now to the immortal and invisible King of theAges, who alone is God, be honour and gloryto the Ages of the Ages! Amen. 001:018 This isthe charge which I entrust to you, my sonTimothy, in accordance with the inspiredinstructions concerning you which were givenme long ago, that being equipped with them asyour armour you may be continually fightingthe good fight, 001:019 holding fast to faith anda clear conscience, which some have castaside and have made shipwreck of their faith.001:020 Among these are Hymenaeus andAlexander, whom I have delivered to Satan sothat they may be taught not to blaspheme.002:001 I exhort then, first of all, thatsupplications, prayers, intercessions andthanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men;002:002 including kings and all who are in highstation, in order that we may live peaceful andtranquil lives with all godliness and gravity.002:003 This is right, and is pleasing in thesight of God our Saviour, 002:004 who iswilling for all mankind to be saved and come toa full knowledge of the truth. 002:005 For thereis but one God and but one Mediator betweenGod and men— Christ Jesus, Himself man;002:006 who gave Himself as the redemption
price for all—a fact testified to at its ownappointed time, 002:007 and of which I havebeen appointed a herald and an Apostle (I amspeaking the truth: it is not a fiction), a teacherof the Gentiles in faith and truth. 002:008 Sothen I would have the men everywhere pray, lifting to God holy hands which are unstainedwith anger or strife; 002:009 and I would havethe women dress becomingly, with modestyand self-control, not with plaited hair or gold orpearls or costly clothes, 002:010 but—as befitswomen making a claim to godliness— with theornament of good works. 002:011 A womanshould quietly learn from others with entiresubmissiveness. 002:012 I do not permit awoman to teach, nor have authority over aman, but she must remain silent. 002:013 ForAdam was formed first, and then Eve; 002:014and Adam was not deceived, but his wife wasthoroughly deceived, and so became involvedin transgression. 002:015 Yet a woman will bebrought safely through childbirth if she and herhusband continue to live in faith and love andgrowing holiness, with habitual self-restraint.003:001 Faithful is the saying, "If any one iseager to have the oversight of a Church, hedesires a noble work." 003:002 A minister thenmust be a man of irreproachable character, true to his one wife, temperate, sober-minded,well-behaved, hospitable to strangers, and witha gift for teaching; 003:003 not a hard drinkernor given to blows; not selfish or quarrelsomeor covetous; 003:004 but ruling his ownhousehold wisely and well, with children kept
under control with true dignity. 003:005 (If aman does not know how to rule his ownhousehold, how shall he have the Church ofGod given into his care?) 003:006 He ought notto be a new convert, for fear he should beblinded with pride and come under the samecondemnation as the Devil. 003:007 It isneedful also that he bear a good character withpeople outside the Church, lest he fall intoreproach or a snare of the Devil. 003:008Deacons, in the same way, must be men ofserious demeanour, not double-tongued, noraddicted to much wine, nor greedy of basegain, 003:009 but holding the secret truths ofthe faith with a clear conscience. 003:010 Andthey must also be well-tried men, and whenfound to be of unblemished character then letthem serve as deacons. 003:011 Deaconesses,in the same way, must be sober-mindedwomen, not slanderers, but in every waytemperate and trustworthy. 003:012 A deaconmust be true to his one wife, and rule hischildren and his own household wisely andwell. 003:013 For those who have filled thedeacon's office wisely and well, are alreadygaining for themselves an honourablestanding, and are acquiring great freedom ofspeech in proclaiming the faith which rests onChrist Jesus. 003:014 All this I write to you, though I am hoping before long to come to seeyou. 003:015 But, for fear I may be hindered, Inow write, so that you may have rules to guideyou in dealing with God's household. For thisis what the Church of the ever-living God is,
and it is the pillar and foundation-stone of thetruth. 003:016 And, beyond controversy, greatis the mystery of our religion— that Christappeared in human form, and His claimsjustified by the Spirit, was seen by angels andproclaimed among Gentile nations, wasbelieved on in the world, and received up againinto glory. 004:001 Now the Spirit expresslydeclares that in later times some will fall awayfrom the faith, giving heed to deceiving spiritsand the teachings of demons; 004:002 throughthe hypocrisy of men who teach falsely andhave their own consciences seared as with ahot iron; 004:003 forbidding people to marry, and insisting on abstinence from foods whichGod has created to be partaken of, withthankfulness, by those who believe and have aclear knowledge of the truth. 004:004 Foreverything that God has created is good, andnothing is to be cast aside, if only it is receivedwith thanksgiving. 004:005 For it is made holyby the word of God and by prayer. 004:006 Ifyou warn the brethren of these dangers youwill be a good and faithful servant of ChristJesus, inwardly feeding on the lessons of thefaith and of the sound teaching of which youhave been, and are, so close a follower.004:007 But worldly stories, fit only forcredulous old women, have nothing to do with.004:008 Train yourself in godliness. Exercisefor the body is not useless, but godliness isuseful in every respect, possessing, as it does, the promise of Life now and of the Life whichis soon coming. 004:009 Faithful is this saying
and deserving of universal acceptance: 004:010and here is the motive of our toiling andwrestling, because we have our hopes fixed onthe ever-living God, who is the Saviour of allmankind, and especially of believers. 004:011Command this and teach this. 004:012 Let noone think slightingly of you because you are ayoung man; but in speech, conduct, love, faithand purity, be an example for your fellowChristians to imitate. 004:013 Till I come, bestow your attention on reading, exhortationand teaching. 004:014 Do not be careless aboutthe gifts with which you are endowed, whichwere conferred on you through a divinerevelation when the hands of the elders wereplaced upon you. 004:015 Habitually practisethese duties, and be absorbed in them; so thatyour growing proficiency in them may beevident to all. 004:016 Be on your guard as toyourself and your teaching. Persevere in thesethings; for by doing this you will make certainyour own salvation and that of your hearers.005:001 Never administer a sharp reprimand toa man older than yourself; but entreat him as ifhe were your father, and the younger men asbrothers; 005:002 the elder women too asmothers, and the younger women as sisters, with perfect modesty. 005:003 Honour widowswho are really in need. 005:004 But if a widowhas children or grandchildren, let these learnfirst to show piety towards their own homesand to prove their gratitude to their parents; forthis is well pleasing in the sight of God.005:005 A widow who is really in need,
friendless and desolate, has her hopes fixed onGod, and continues at her supplications andprayers, night and day; 005:006 but a pleasure-loving widow is dead even while still alive.005:007 Press these facts upon them, so thatthey may live lives free from reproach. 005:008But if a man makes no provision for thosedependent on him, and especially for his ownfamily, he has disowned the faith and isbehaving worse than an unbeliever. 005:009 Nowidow is to be put on the roll who is undersixty years of age. 005:010 She must have beentrue to her one husband, and well reported offor good deeds, as having brought up children, received strangers hospitably, washed the feetof God's people, given relief to the distressed, and devoted herself to good works of everykind. 005:011 But the younger widows youmust not enrol; for as soon as they begin tochafe against the yoke of Christ, they want tomarry, 005:012 and they incur disapproval forhaving broken their original vow. 005:013 Andat the same time they also learn to be idle asthey go round from house to house; and theyare not only idle, but are gossips also andbusybodies, speaking of things that ought notto be spoken of. 005:014 I would therefore havethe younger women marry, bear children, rulein domestic matters, and furnish the Adversarywith no excuse for slander. 005:015 For alreadysome of them have gone astray, followingSatan. 005:016 If a believing woman haswidows dependent on her, she should relievetheir wants, and save the Church from being
burdened— so that the Church may relieve thewidows who are really in need. 005:017 Let theElders who perform their duties wisely andwell be held worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in preaching andteaching. 005:018 For the Scripture says, "Youare not to muzzle the ox while it is treading outthe grain;" and the workman deserves his pay.005:019 Never entertain an accusation againstan Elder except on the evidence of two of threewitnesses. 005:020 Those who persist in sinreprove in the presence of all, so that it mayalso be a warning to the rest. 005:021 Isolemnly call upon you, in the presence of Godand of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels, tocarry out these instructions of mine withoutprejudice, and to do nothing from partiality.005:022 Do not ordain any one hastily; and donot be a partaker in the sins of others; keep*yourself* pure. 005:023 (No longer be a water-drinker; but take a little wine for the sake ofyour digestion and your frequent ailments.)005:024 The sins of some men are evident tothe world, leading the way to your estimate oftheir characters, but the sins of others lagbehind. 005:025 So also the right actions ofsome are evident to the world, and those thatare not cannot remain for ever out of sight.006:001 Let all who are under the yoke ofslavery hold their own masters to be deservingof honour, so that the name of God and theChristian teaching may not be spoken against.006:002 And those who have believing mastersshould not be wanting in respect towards them
